Ex-RPOF official says Crist approved Jim Greer fundraising

Note: What do we know about Harry Sargeant? This whole thing can go down like dominoes if he's credible. On the upside, we might get the law trial Democrats finally supporting a Democrat in the next election.

TALLAHASSEE -- Former Florida Republican finance chairman Harry Sargeant III -- a South Florida billionaire entangled in his own financial scandal -- has signed a sworn statement that former Gov. Charlie Crist and George LeMieux first suggested the idea that Jim Greer take over as party fundraiser.

The affidavit, dated April 12, is part of Greer's legal battle with the Republican Party of Florida for $123,000 in severance that was never paid after he resigned as party chairman in 2010.

In the sworn statement, the former frat brother of Crist's says the idea for Greer to take over the fundraising for the state party "was suggested" during conversations with Crist and LeMieux in late 2008, and he "was surprised when Greer was charged with a crime related to setting up a company for fundraising."

Greer is awaiting trial in Orlando, charged with theft, fraud and money laundering. He is accused of setting up a shell company called Victory Strategies to funnel $125,000 in party funds into his personal bank accounts in 2009 while he was chairman. He says the money was rightfully earned as fund-raising commissions.
