Why Nathan Deal dislikes Jason Carter in Georgia

There’s a reason that the governor’s race seems like an increasingly bitter affair.
As November nears, it seems like Gov. Nathan Deal’s frustration with Democrat Jason Carter grows. The governor, a 72-year-old with four decades of public experience, is locked in a tight contest with the Atlanta state senator, and both campaigns are quietly bracing for a possible December runoff.
The governor explained why it seems like Carter, a two-term senator, gets under his skin more than, say, Roy Barnes did in the gubernatorial election four years ago.
Said Deal:
“It is hard to debate against a ghost. He has no substance. He’s been in the state Senate for as long as I’ve been the governor. And he has never been a leader on anything. When I say that he’s never passed a piece of legislation and he responds by saying you’ve signed a bunch of bills with my name on it – yeah. He’s a back bencher. He’s somebody who is a ‘Me, too’ guy. Let someone else be the lead sponsor of legislation. Let them do the hard work. And then I’ll come along and put my name on the bill, too.
“He spent four years with his finger in the political winds trying to decide what’s best for his political future. Unlike me and unlike Roy Barnes. We have something to show for our time in the General Assembly. When I was at his point in my career, in my second term, Zell Miller selected me to be the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Jason Carter hasn’t even been selected the assistant secretary of the Democratic caucus.

ATLANTA -- The Georgia governor's race was roiled this week by new revelations in a long-standing ethics investigation of the incumbent, Republican Nathan Deal.

His opponent, State Sen. Jason Carter, a Democrat, says that a newly-revealed memo, in which the head of the state ethics commission claimed an attorney for Deal threatened her agency while it was investigating complaints against the governor, shows a "pattern of intimidation and interference on the part of the governor's office."

3. Probably a fair number of them, but at the county or municipal level.

We, for instance, have a decent Republican county auditor who is a CPA. He'll probably be the sole Republican I vote for this year. But it does seem like the 'sleaze factor' goes way up, and empathy for the poor way down once they start getting up to the level of state rep or senator.
