(68,644 posts)Times have changed!
Some parents have chosen to only establish boundaries as a last resort, and often too late.
The result is poorly socialized adults who are loud in public, might litter without a thought, leave their shopping carts in an empty parking stall at Safeway or Nob Hill, etc., etc.
I'm kind of glad that I was raised differently.

(86,536 posts)sign this petition but I have a question I want to ask first.
I've noticed that all the names are initials, does that mean you have to use your initials or does the petition application do that automatically? I need to know because I have a privacy concern and don't want to have my full name (if required by the site) to end up on the web site for all to see.
Thanks.

(68,644 posts)They ask for your full name and then only display initials.
However, if concerned, you could use a pseudonym, I doubt that they verify identities, only your email address is unique.
And I doubt that doing this is in any way illegal.
I wanted to confirm that first, it isn't clear in the terms of use and privacy info.
I'm on it. I am sorry to say that her offense amounts to a misdemeanor which doesn't have much bite to it unless each individual park brings up separate charges, that might result in repeat offender status which might have some actual teeth.
NYC_SKP
(68,644 posts)Not that they would hit her with all that but I think she's earned it.

(86,536 posts)Somehow I am afraid that she won't get that much punishment, but then we all know her name now.
Looks like the petition is getting some traction, the count jumped by close to 200 signatures in the few minutes it took for me to confirm my signature. Hope it makes the goal and then some.
Thanks for posting the petition link and for your assistance!!

No one wants to see her vandalism. Hope they make her clean this crap up and then lock her in jail. She is not an artist, just a common criminal stealing from the public for her personal profit.

(17,103 posts)As an ex-Federal inmate with significant time under my belt, I can assure you that people are imprisoned for low-impact trivial offenses on Federal land.
I knew a guy doing time for shoplifting pants at the Yosemite gift store.
I had a friend who did time for driving drunk on Federal property.
People have done Fed time behind lower-quality offenses than what Casey Nocket is doing.
My other question is: She can't possibly be supporting herself and all this travel by selling her "art ." There's a lot of money tied up in travel, lodging, supplies, and food for all the locations she's vandalizing. Are Mommy and Daddy financing this? If not them, then who? And are they culpable in the mountain of felonies she has committed?
And don't let her off with the doe-eyed teary innocent "I'm Sorry I Apologize I won't do it anymore boo hoo" routine.

(53,661 posts)done on purpose in order to devalue the heritage, natural environment of the parks, to ward off visitors and later abandon the land to private interests.
It happens in states under the guise of budget cutting resulting in degradation of the parks, then closure and after a few years of being denied access to the public, they forget about them and they are sold off to private interests.
She may be employed by a group with that intent. After numerous assaults on the Commons, the public gives in and the private forces take it away.

(53,661 posts)In the end, the Commons are lost and the citizens get the short end despite protests. Land donated to the state to protect it ends up going into the hands of developers and never to be seen again. They use slick campaigns to call proposed land changes an improvement, and they manufacture consent in media simply by putting up billboards with some catchy, positive meme and getting air time.
Then the fix is in and the land that was supposed to be gained in land swaps ends up to be lousy land and the good land ends up in gated preserves with the new landed gentry in homes that cost millions. The public receives no payment, as they get the land for nothing and the developers sell it high. The new residents don't associate with the people downhill, who often get flooded from the hills being denuded for these communities.
They get exemptions from laws on ground water use, waste water and it's just NOYB after that. In time they move the city hall of established communities who suffer the losses, zone out whatever small business and other rural entities that they don't want to see on their way into their area. It all falls in place like dominoes.
Meanwhile remaining public parks have no staff to keep them up and if a person wants to go for a day hike they're told they are going at their own risk because of car break ins in the parking lot. It's so bad people are told if they are going to hike to have someone drop them off because their car will be broken into for sure or vandalized while they are out of sight.
And it's accepted, since it's not private land, and the locals go along with it, even decry the last existing public amenities. After all, if the people were worthy, they'd own enough land to play on.
Go the national forest lands and the roads are full of pot holes, locals dump cars, household furniture, toxic and other trash in the formerly spiritually invigorating woods. Take a ride and find a load of Bundy militia who stare down anyone driving up the road to the trail heads. As if the park belongs to them and visitors are the trespassers.
I'm sure not all the state is like that, but I've seen it up close as it developed, and others in other parts of the state report they are seeing the same things in their areas. Particularly the militia types meeting in the woods. If I sound a bit paranoid at times about the Bundities, etc., it's because I've met them here in the PNW. They are not a fiction of media.
The destruction of the Commons inevitably leads to tribalism and oppression. These are the same areas that are now run by fundies and want all the things the Koch brothers want. And tell the women to be silent in church and elsewhere.

(86,536 posts)anyone can buy and "all parks pass" for $80 (good for a year) and if you travel light and use rideshare options, not too pricey to go about and do something that stupid. That's why she needs to be arrested and prosecuted. Acrylics come in tubes so it's not too hard to carry them in a frame pack for back country trekking. Lodging doesn't appear to be an issue for her since much of this was done in backcountry locations, otherwise she would have been found out sooner. She could be a couch-surfer which is pretty cheap too.
Just sayin'

(36,221 posts)It is my opinion that this Tumblr account is NOT operated by Casey Nocket. The new Tumblr blog only goes back as far as when the original version was taken down, the visual and writing style are completely different, and the new content seems more interested in stirring up controversy via combative language and buzzwords like mansplaining. As it goes for all trolls, I would encourage everyone to ignore this new Tumblr blog and hope that all of the new journalists who are coming to the story dont associate this new content with Ms. Nocket.

(11,175 posts)I know enough to gather that chalk would've been much easier to remove, but I don't know the story with acrylic paint. With an appropriate solvent, a wire brush, and some elbow grease, can the vandalized sites be restored to pretty close to their natural condition? or is someone pretty much going to have to sandblast off much of the rock face?
ETA: I signed the petition. Thanks for the link!
blackspade
(10,056 posts)Acrylics also don't soak into porous surfaces like oil paints do, so there is that.
So yes, they can be clean up, but it was such a shitty thing to do, it does little to mitigate what she did.
theHandpuppet
(19,964 posts)It also looks as if she used the marker to deface sandstone in which case, I don't know how you would go about removing it without doing some damage. Sandstone is porous and trying to remove that ink with chemicals may only make things worse.

(19,964 posts)"I don't see this as art, I see this as vandalism," said Aly Baltrus with Chief of Interpretation and Visitor Services at Zion National Park. Baltrus said a team of park rangers at Zion set out to find the defaced rock at the park, take pictures for evidence, and then clean the rock. She said if they find it, the author who signed some of her works "creepytings", will face prosecution. She said although the rangers can probably clean the rock, it will certainly be damaged as the park's famous red rock is sandstone.
blackspade
(10,056 posts)Sharpies, for instance, can be cleaned up with rubbing alcohol with limited damage in most cases.
Unfortunately sandblasting (or walnut hull blasting) might be required, although at petroglyph sites that is likely not an option.
It's a terrible situation in any case.
theHandpuppet
(19,964 posts)I've cleaned up sharpies before and all manner of inks and stains. Porous sandstone... I dunno, I think even rubbing alcohol would further bleed the ink into the rock. I guess we'll find out. What a selfish, despicable thing to do. I suspect you're right that some kind of gentle blasting (sounds like an oxymoron) may be required.
