Cuomo and Mr. Christie

"A nurse who had recently worked with Ebola patients in West Africa and was placed under quarantine shortly after she landed in Newark on Friday under a new order by the governors of New York and New Jersey has tested negative for the Ebola virus, New Jersey officials said on Saturday.
The nurse, who had no symptoms when she landed at Newark Liberty International Airport but developed a fever while quarantined there, will have additional tests to confirm that finding, the New Jersey Department of Health said in a statement. She was taken to University Hospital in Newark from the airport and will remain under mandatory quarantine for 21 days in accordance with the policy announced late Friday afternoon by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York and Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey."
.....
"The new measures go beyond what federal guidelines require and what infectious disease experts recommend. They were also taken without consulting the citys health department, according to a senior city official."

(25,183 posts)Cuomo's going to win, no matter what, right? At least that's the conventional wisdom.
So, if I'm appalled by his pandering to irrational fear, and buddying up to Gov. Chrispie Creme, then it's perfectly safe for me to cast a vote for some third party candidate as a protest, right?
Get enough people thinking that way, and Astorino might win.

(26,060 posts)We've already had one doctor (and one nurse in Dallas) completely ignore a 21 day incubation period for ebola. Two health professionals who thought they knew better than everyone else and got on very public transportation. You will not see NYC freak out about this but while we admire what this doctor has done for DWB, he behaved irresponsibly towards his fellow NYers. People who have come into contact with Ebola patients should observe that incubation period and I don't think that's a lot to ask them. This wont effect the gov race at all. Astorino is an asshole.

(25,183 posts)and for a different reason. NYS is not NYC, and Gov. Cuomo's action will be applauded by upstate NY'ers who are glad to see him show some leadership on this issue. Whatever he loses from the third-party protest voters, he picks up from mushy middle upstate voters who feel reassured.
Too bad the President didn't feel the same way. At this point, we're going to see nonstop coverage of Dr. Spencer all the way to the election, and in the heart of the largest media machine in the United States. It's going to scare the crap out of swing voters all across the country.

(26,060 posts)They've already released his girlfriend from the hospital although she'll stay at home for the duration of the incubation period. I honestly don't think it'll only be "upstaters" that will applaud this protocol. If the doctor had observed the incubation period, this wouldn't be a problem but it did bring forth that expecting all the health professionals - doctors AND nurses - to err on the side of caution was not going to work. Also, the disease got into the US because it came into our airports - we're not isolating everyone - just those who came into contact with ebola patients. I don't see a problem with this. You combat diseases like these by isolating them.

(25,183 posts)I figured most NYC'ers would already vote for Cuomo, absent any third party candidates, maybe his decisiveness will strengthen their resolve to do so.
Yes, Dr. Spencer is now in good hands, but he won't be out of the woods until after the election, so he'll still be in the drumbeat of news up until that day. The President took a chance that Ebola wouldn't get to the US, and the gamble went south.
At this point in time, the only Americans who have been infected with Ebola have caught it from an infected person from West Africa, but if there is ever an American-to-American infection, then the crazy goes up another notch.

(15,435 posts)His father, HE AIN'T! I'm not a NY'er, but what I've seen and heard about him is very disturbing! Much better than Christie? I'm not sure. When all the stuff about the bridge started I noticed Cuomo stayed "very quiet." I told my husband at the time, just wait we're gonna hear about Cuomo next. He really bothers me and I find him rather dangerous in many ways. Between him and Di Blasio I see no love lost! Not sure what skeletons are still in the closet when it comes to Mr. Cuomo. There's something "hinky" that I feel about him.

Cuomo Sticks The Shiv Into De Blasio Before Election Day
<<Last spring, Governor Andrew Cuomo beat Mayor Bill de Blasio badly in fights over charter school co-locations and tax increases on wealthy New Yorkers to pay for NYC's universal pre-K plan....
...Even I thought Cuomo would wait until after the election to "fuck over" de Blasio, but it turns out Cuomo, worried that his GOP challenger Rob Astorino is making inroads over the first reported Ebola case in the city, decided post-Election Day was too late to screw de Blasio over.
So he did it yesterday instead.
On Thursday, Cuomo and de Basio made a joint appearance to reassure city residents after it was reported a doctor who had worked with Ebola patients in West Africa had tested positive for the virus here in the city.
Both Cuomo and de Blasio took pains on Thursday to tamp down hysteria over the incident and assure New Yorkers that the chances of getting infected by Ebola on the subway or in a cab were slim.
That was Thursday....>>
