Yesterday's rocket explosion is one reason Alan Shepard should be seen as Bad Ass #1.

After all those explosions on the pad and all those explosions in the air, they came to him and said "Alan, we think we got it figured out. You're our first choice. Will you go for the ride?"

Alan Shepard's response was "Yeah, I'll give it a shot".

and be the first. There were times that corners were cut later, and some may have had misgivings by then, but the enthusiasm in the early days - when their space programme was leading the world - is undeniable.
