Mid-year elections and special elections...

Democrats usually do not do well in mid-year and special elections. Republicans survive as a Party because of these elections. They usually lose when the popular vote is taken across the country.

For example, there was a recall election of two Democrats in Colorado last year over the clip size of gun owners. About 11% turned out, mostly gun owners, and the Democrats were recalled.

For some reason, Democrats turn out for national elections but not for mid-term elections. Why is that? If Democrats turned out for these elections, they would probably enjoy a large majority in the House and the Senate?
