(Made Me Laugh): True Catholics,” he writes, must “resist” the Pope’s pressure to change the Church.

For over a year conservative Catholics have had their chastity belts in a twist over Francis and apparently, the chafing has finally grown too much to bear.

Over at The New York Times, columnist Ross Douthat, a convert to Roman Catholicism, warned that Francis’s current path could “eventually lead to real schism.” With the threat of schism hanging in the air he then encourages a kind of rebellion: “True Catholics,” he writes, must “resist” the Pope’s pressure to change the Church.

Other conservatives agree, pointing to Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, in which the upstart self-proclaimed Apostle Paul describes a meeting when he called out Peter—the first Pope—for hypocrisy. To his face and everything. According to Paul, Peter backed down. Now traditionalists want to use this as a precedent for calling out the Pope when he’s not Pope-y enough.

Benedict is hanging back for now, but there’s no doubt that he could easily become a figurehead for traditionalists harkening back to the good old days.

Proof-texting from scripture in order to criticize the Pope—now who’s being Protestant?

crossed my mind too. When the institution becomes the religion rather than the spirit and inspirition behind it, it is time to pull it down and start over. Francis is trying to make Christians feel the force (FEEL THE FORCE,LUKE) and spirit of the church and realize how mired they have become in tradition .

Hell, I remember the uproar in breaking the tradition of meatless Fridays and women not having to wear a hat or headcovering in church.

Times, they are achanging.

Non-Popey!

They were pissed about Vatican II as well.

Great idea to make a pedophile, disgraced, only retired Pope, the figurehead.

Gotta love the Roman Catholic Church

The current ones that are upset about Vatican II are still around too.

The second someone tries to change the status quo, they will disagree with the head of their Church, Jesus Christ (certainly disagreed with him) and pretend that they are the righteous ones.

It never fails. They can't stand change.

... otherwise he'd still be Pope.

One can't help but think some scandal was the cause of Benedict's retirement, a scandal much worse than the usual papal shenanigans and hypocrisies.

I figure that it was going to come out that he was a pedo. Either that, or he had Alzheimer's and didn't want people to see it. Frankly, I think he was a witness to JPII's decline and didn't want to go through the same thing.

Much like how the right wing in this country has cast Obama - a true centrist if ever there was one - as some sort of radical.

A conservative is someone who stands athwart history, yelling Stop, at a time when no one is inclined to." What he forgot to add is "whether the facts merit it or not."

One of the constants of history is that right-wingers have never believed in material or moral progress save for the elites. Twas ever thus.

And Douthat is a cretin.
