A quote once attributed to comedian, George Burns.
But it seems the Republican Party has perfected it. They can lie straight to your face and make you believe it, especially if you're a Republican voter.
As we now know, they are for balanced budgets, they are for "saving" Social Security, they are for a "strong defense", they are for the average working man, they are for voting rights for all minorities. They say they are for all these things and they say it in the most sincere way.
But their sincerity, as we now know, is cloaked in deception. They don't want any of these things. They want power. They want taxcuts for their wealthy friends. They want to cut all government programs for people, including Social Security. They don't care about the debt or huge deficits. That is only a talking point to keep Democrats from spending on social programs once they are in power.
But, they fool enough of the people enough of the time to either gain control of a certain portion of the government or enough to mess up everything they might disagree with.
They are very good at faking sincerity. They have raised deceptive tactics to a new level. The worst part of it all is that no one calls them on it.

(13,218 posts)There doesn't seem to be any sincerity, fake or otherwise. Maybe it's just a different viewpoint for us, but the same idea.

(111,095 posts)And Republican supporters believe them to be sincere?
Much the same way we believe most Democrats to be sincere?
After all, I know they're hypocrites, and maybe they think their sincere act is fooling me!

(16,245 posts)They say what they have focus-grouped that people want to hear. Make those promises with no intention of ever keeping them. They only keep the promises for the moneybags.
Yes, I am completely cynical. I don't believe any of them. Some do fake sincerity better than others, though. I think Bill Clinton was especially good at pretending to "feel you pain."
Maybe it's not faking sincerity I hate so much as faking empathy.
