We need smiles today...
In this small Ontario city quite a few years ago, maybe 2009, a well dressed woman and I (a dressed for the garden older woman) waited together at a Garden Center for something that was in a back room... Now usually I love watching people who love plants as they shop for their gardens.
But this woman was in an anxious state and needed to vent..
Finally, as we waited together, she whispered to me that someone at her Church had given her a book to read (she looked around to make sure we were not being overheard) and that Obama was not an American, that he was not a Christian...that he was (gasp) a Muslim ...(her voice was escalating in fear)
and that he was going to bring in Socialism...She had terrified herself by this time...and was actually imagining the horror of it all.
I told her that recently I had had a severe cancer... and was fortunate, as a Canadian, not to have to mortgage my home to pay for the treatment.. as an American might have to do... (This was before Obamacare). Thankfully, she calmed down..and seemed to realize that she was safe..in the Garden Center.
She was like a walking science experiment about how to overwhelm fact based thought and replace it with escalating fear and panic and she was definitely suggestible in the panicked state.
And of course, by 2014..who knows what she now has been persuaded to believe...
Thanks again for the toons... they reinforce my beliefs.. as we await with hope and some angst...the results of Nov 4, 2014.
