(14,691 posts)I signed it and posted to Facebook. Election Day used to be a holiday so the idea isn't totally new. Thanks!

(7,290 posts)but it would be pretty meaningless. Businesses don't have to let people have the day off for federal holidays anyway, so the people that need it the most will probably still have to work.
I think early voting is much more effective than a potential federal voting holiday, but JMO.

we forward this petition around to them, too.

(9,298 posts)Bernie's got nearly 47,000 signatures - not bad for the petition being up only one day. But kicking for those who may have missed it yesterday because of a hectic Friday.

(7,768 posts)Before we had mail-in voting here in Washington State, my ex and I treated Election Day as IF it was a Holiday!
We would get semi dressed up (well..at least out of our ubiquitous Northwest jeans and flannel), head to the High School gymnasium at 07:30 and visit with friends we hadn't seen in a while who were also standing in line, to sign in and then vote.
After voting and affixing the "I VOTED" sticker to our collars or jackets, we would head to a wonderful, crowded, steamy cafe for a huge breakfast of bone-in ham, eggs and hash browns that a plate could barely contain. I MISS those days actually...it was an "event".
But I also understand how my previous tradition isn't at all feasible for millions and millions of people.
BRING ON THE NATIONAL HOLIDAY!
I proudly signed Bernie's petition!

(2,969 posts)Or even if he can make enough headway on it to put it into a position to be viable later.
But I need to see more about how he intends to move this forward. Lots of progressive politicians have great plans that sit on their desks and websites gathering some signatures and going nowhere.
Sanders needs to show us he can break some balls and make something important happen.
