Some on DU posted this video http://www.democraticunderground.com/1017225474 a few minutes ago of Bill Maher calling for Jerry Brown to run for president. He main point was ageism in America, but he also pointed out Brown's track record since taking over in 2011. He took over a state government that was a total shambles and is making it work again. He campaigned for a ballot measure raising taxes on the rich and won. And did I mention we now have Covered California. We have a long way to go towards restoring state services to where I think they should be and Brown is more cautious than I prefer. But he understands math, the constitutional requirement of a balanced budget and the fact that we can't print money like the federal government can. Should Brown decide to run, he has my vote.

(15,512 posts)I think it would be about the 10th time.

(10,117 posts)...I'm not sure I would wish that job on anyone in the current hostile environment.
Like President Obama, Brown is too good a person...

(149,625 posts)But he's too old.
I don't think he wants to be President, anyway.
On edit: Of course, I would vote for him if he were our candidate!

(9,314 posts)I have admired the man for decades. Age is not a factor. Performance counts.

(3,163 posts)You must not have been around for his first term. The present Brown, sure.

(68,644 posts)I'd do it again.

(9,126 posts)Is he a liberal wet dream? No. But the first thing he did once elected was tell Republicans to go fuck themselves. And then he raised taxes. He's acting like a Democrat, so I'll vote for him. It's really not that hard. When he had a supermajority, he didn't reach across the aisle; he put Democratic policies in place--WITHOUT APOLOGY. And I am satisfied. I will criticize him when he does stupid shit like support fracking or fail to do something about the water companies. But if on average he keeps moving the state forward, I'll support him.

(5,790 posts)My mom voted for him in -- '76, I think.
He's too damn old for POTUS. However, I think California should consider naming him Governor-for-life.
If Hillary weren't running, and he were on the ticket, I'll admit I'd consider voting for him.
On an unrelated topic: Boxer - running? retiring? If not running, who? Kamala Harris? Gavin Newsom? Someone else?
MoonchildCA
(1,301 posts)Most likely Newsom for governor and Harris for Senate, but I don't have a preference at this time. I do hope to see, at least Gavin Newsom, and possibly Kamala Harris, on the national seen in the next 4 to 8 years.

(5,790 posts)Also, we have several CongressCritters (Waxman, Waters, Honda, and some others) for whom we should be grooming replacements.

(8,515 posts)but I think his role should be VP. I believe he is a going to be a really good candidate, but I don't know nearly enough about him.

(10,893 posts)also wouldn't be a bad pick.

(58,660 posts)Hey, he'd be better than Hillary IMHO. I still don't buy the whole coronation of her myself. He'd never get the super majority he enjoys currently in Sacramento, though.
Jack Rabbit
(45,984 posts)That will make him 78 in 2016. He'll run for re-election in 2020 at the age of 82.

(49,212 posts)He'll be 78 in 2016. He'd be 82 by the end of that term, and 86 by the end of a possible subsequent term.
The average male life expectancy in the US is 77.

(49,212 posts)But being treated for cancer and running for president don't sound like two activities I'd care to juggle at a fraction of his age.

(12,213 posts)He ran in the late 80's though, and I voted for him in the primary. I remember his posters "We the People, Take America Back!"
I may still have one somewhere.

(149,625 posts)He is more likely to die of something else before that does him any real harm.

(10,336 posts)Jerry Brown has had my ear since he was Governor the first time, way back when.

(36,745 posts)Even just one term of Jerry Brown would be good for this country.
A Brown/Warren ticket would be amazing.

(10,117 posts)...good for the country. He has great common sense and a calming demeanor that could be useful.
kiranon
(1,727 posts)He's 76 and he'd do a great job. Doubt he would consider running. He's not into campaigning and he's very cheap - he'd let the other side talk itself out and just speak plainly and not that often and could win.
