(68,644 posts)If you have a land line phone, keep a wired phone ready, cordless phones don't work if the power goes out.
Keep your mobile devices charged and dial down their use if the power goes out.
And cuddle up and keep warm!

(24,411 posts)I hope everyone in the affected areas are warm, have power and plenty of needed supplies.
I remember experiencing 25 inches of snow in Iowa, in 1975. That was crazy. The drifts soared
over our house. What the NY area is getting, sounds off-the-charts.
Take care and check in to let us know how it's going!

I have never lived in Buffalo, but did grow up in the Utica area. I also worked for an airline that flew to those cities and I can remember many times when the airports were closed for several days because of the snow.

I have to admit I was and at your post.

This was my front yard about 2-weeks ago...
This was my front yard this morning...
Just before noon...
For reference, I am a 5'-10" male, and the snow in the foreground (the foreground mind you) would be at my belly button.
Around 2pm...
And around 4pm, just before I ruined the scene by shoveling off the deck.
(I was worried about the predicted rain later in the week and subsequent weight)
Going back to bed now. Tired.
Must rest for more shoveling tomorrow.
Maybe I will make it to work.

But I am used to it, been in Buffalo almost all my life:

(Typical snow fall, not a "blizzard year"
NG at about age 11 (Blizzard of '77):
In the top photo, I am in the middle of the road and there is a car buried where the flags are.
There is old "Oshgosh" snow blower in the back ground.
Flags were placed to keep the snow blower from taking an unwelcome bite, which would likely ruin the car and the blower.
Missed almost 2-weeks of school that year.
But we usually made the best of our time:
Ok, now back to bed....

(18,186 posts)My cuz in Brewerton was stoked yesterday because it's bow season and the snow didn't impede their hunt.
I reminded him that he should not gloat. I grew up in Syracuse and remember well the Blizzard of '66.
Mom: "Whatever you kids do, DON'T open the front door!"
We kids: Let's open the front door!
Wall of snow!
Mom: AAAARRRGH!
I loved it as a kid. We got down to 11.1 degrees here last night but only little flakes

(17,621 posts)Tell them not to do it.
We were all amazed at the wall of snow and then it was, "Quick! Close the door before Mom knows!"
Like she didn't know already

(10,622 posts)I live on the border of south buffalo and the southern suburbs. So... kinda stuck here.
I shoveled a few feet worth yesterday afternoon, but upon awakening it appears as if I did nothing.
Procrastinating over coffee as I plan my days excavations, the first hurdle is an 8' snow drift off my side door on the path to the front gate, have to get through that before uncovering the gate and proceeding to the front path and then the street sidewalk. I expect to be at it most of the day.
I worry about running out of breath too fast between breaks due to pulmonary hypertension, if I am lucky perhaps it will kill me today.
Not receiving very much oxygen when you breath can be a real hurdle to shoveling out.
