The title comes from an old proverb that it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. In the novel, Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) gives air rifles as Christmas presents to his daughter Scout (Mary Badham) and his son Jem (Phillip Alford), warning them that they should shoot only at tin-cans and finches but not at mockingbirds. Scout is puzzled by this remark and asks Miss Maudie Atkinson (Rosemary Murphy) about it. Miss Maudie says, "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, they don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." The mockingbird is seen to be a harmless creature that does its best to please its hearers by singing but is defenseless against hunters. The wrongness of killing the bird is evident, and it becomes a metaphor for the wrongness of harming innocent and vulnerable people.

(6,228 posts)I am thankful my father retired as a union drywaller a couple years ago. I think back to what my family endured, financially, in the 1980's and 1990's when illegal immigrants flooded the drywall labor market. All but one company in town went non-union, wages were slashed in half in less than a decade and many of my father's friends literally lost their homes. What they mean when they say illegal immigrants work the jobs Americans won't is "they work the jobs that Americans were once proud to work but that pay dick since the labor market was flooded."
Since you love to read books and relate them back, I suggest you revisit The Grapes of Wrath to be reminded what happens when we let our corporate and political leaders manipulate us into flooding their labor markets for them.

About the time wages shot down. However, the bigger questions are:
1. How does this prevent a repeat of history (just as today is a repeat of 1986)?
2. What does this do to help to citizens of Mexico?
3. How do we improve the economy of our neighbors so that we don't just have low skilled workers entering the US illegally, deflating the wages of working class citizens?
I agree that these are people and we need to support and help them. But, I would really like a progressive president to come up with a plan that helps these people, while also actually looking to fix the over-riding problem and show an ounce of regard for the working class citizens who get dicked over and over with this issue. It is odd how the government is once again aligned with the entities who stand to benefit the most from this action - corporations.

(2,807 posts)It is the "illegal" part which allows unscrupulous employers take advantage of workers and drive down wages. This changes somewhat and makes it better for the average working Joe. It will be harder to pay slave wages for labor.

(83,661 posts)The characters name was Atticus Finch.
Remember its a sin to kill a mockingbird. That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it.
Your fathers right, she said. Mockingbirds dont do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. Thats why its a sin to kill a mockingbird.
These lines from Chapter 10 are the source of the novels title and introduce one of the key metaphors of the book: the idea of mockingbirds as good, innocent people who are destroyed by evil. Boo Radley, for instance, is like a mockingbirdjust as mockingbirds do not harm people but only sing their hearts out for us, Boo does not harm anyone; instead, he leaves Jem and Scout presents, covers Scout with a blanket during the fire, and eventually saves the children from Bob Ewell. Despite the pureness of his heart, however, Boo has been damaged by an abusive father. The connection between songbirds and innocents is made explicitly several times in the book: in Chapter 25, Mr. Underwood likens Tom Robinsons death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children; in Chapter 30, Scout tells Atticus that hurting Boo Radley would be sort of like shootin a mockingbird. The moral imperative to protect the vulnerable governs Atticuss decision to take Toms case, just as it leads Jem to protect the roly-poly bug from Scouts hand.

(25,771 posts)Now, about my post.
I was trying to politely point to a mistake / typo in your post:
Atticus said they could shoot tin cans and blue Jays. Though your use of Sparknotes does not mention this,
(tsk, tsk - sorry, my dad was an English teacher. In high school I would not be caught dead referring to Cliff's Notes)
The avian metaphor is extended here to reference the fact that while mockingbirds sing their hearts out for us, blue jays are known to take and eat eggs and nestlings of other birds, i.e. Boo's father, et al.
