More than 1,000 people gathered Tuesday afternoon in front of the Justice Center, blocking off Southwest Third Avenue and Madison Street in downtown Portland, calling for police reform in the wake of the Ferguson grand jury decision.
The rally was organized by the Albina Ministerial Alliance, a coalition of faith leaders who for years have been pushing for systemic change in the Portland Police Bureau, which has faced accusations of excessive force against minorities and people with mental illness.
Roy Tate, pastor at Christ Memorial Community Church, said he's been talking about police reform for 30 years. The killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, marked a turning point in the conversation, he said, thanks to the national attention it's drawn.
"Change comes because people want it to come," he said, looking at the crowd. "They want it."
