http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2014/11/26/homophobic-hate-crimes-on-the-rise-in-the-uk/

Scotland Yard has noted an increase in homophobic hate crimes in the U.K. over the past year.

From the article:

(In) some areas the number of crimes recorded has surged drastically – with South Wales police recording 162 violent crimes, up from 89 two years ago, and Greater Manchester recording 278 – up from 231 last year.

to search something/someone to hate to give themselves that feel good feeling. It is so damn sick. Maye it's the better reporting procedures, maybe it's the fact haters are seeing others are not haters like they are. Whatever, it is truly evil.

It seems as though secular society is becoming more accepting, but the religious nuts are digging in deeper.

Fundamentalism barely exists here. There's a little of it, mainly imported from you guys, but only a little and mainly confined to the big cities.

You have a large Muslim population who are for the most part virulently anti-homosexual. It would be interesting to see an ethnic breakdown of the perpetrators. I have a hard time believing that the secular population at large is becoming more anti gay.

That's like some people here who want to blame the astronomical rise in rape in Sweden on immigration on you know who.

You don't want to see the ethnic breakdown of rape in Sweden.

In addition, Reuters reported in 2006 that 25% of the hate crimes against gays were being done by Muslims, who make up 2% of the population. In other words, a gay person is far more likely to be at risk from a Muslim in England than a Christian.

So, yes, there is some truth to the idea that Islam is not terribly friendly towards homosexuality and trangenderism. The British education system has been trying to address that.

."Meanwhile the death penalty for being gay is on the books in Afghanistan, Iran, Mauritania, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen. Prison sentences for gays in Malaysia, Pakistan and for men in Uzbekistan (not against the law for women)."

I don't know if that's true or not but it may explain a lot.

I'm an atheist.

In my town, my gripe is with the evangelicals who didn't even allow us to sell alcohol until a few years ago.

Religious extremism is a danger to all societies. Sometimes it's Christian extremists, which causes a lot of the problems in the U.S. with their anti-gay and "pro-life" bullshit and sometimes it's Islamic extremists, which causes a lot of problems in the UK.

P.S. The EDL can go fuck itself.

We have a few extremists in a few mosques. They're largely rejected by the mainstream Muslim population and, I'm pretty sure, allowed to stay at large because they're a useful intelligence tool (seeing who they communicate with). But there's only a few of them and the vast majority of our Muslim population are peaceful and law-abiding.

I wonder what the world stats are. I haven't seen the FBI stats for this country yet, they should have been out this month for last year's totals. I'll try to dig it up in between pre-paring for tomorrow's dinner.
