NAACP members marching from Ferguson to Jefferson City encountered this crowd. Warning: listening to the taunts may lead to It seems like there is something so terribly wrong with people who behave that way. But, sadly they're probably just a bunch of ordinary, ignorant fools.
That's Missouri... this is what years and years and years of inbreeding do....Scientist take note.

(17,651 posts)But there is power in numbers and that power is strength and the glue holding us all together through a hateful fire.

(13,390 posts)They saw some very hard times and a lot of death. Their mantra and priority through this has been to keep people safe. I will catch up with some of them on Fri.

(38,613 posts)A preacher I heard speak at a rally mentioned that the trailblazers must be in terrible pain. After all that work, some progress, and even the election of a black president, they are still burying black youth.

(2,593 posts)I'm sick about these police brutality cases and to think there are those who vocally support these outrageous acts makes me ashamed and feeling hopeless.

(13,390 posts)The up side is that the NAACP stayed classy. They are doing a really good job here.

You know DU, we're really tired............so tired of being treated like this.
We've done nothing wrong but be born and all we want is to live a good life and take care of ourselves and our families.
IS THAT TOO MUCH TO FUCKING ASK???!!!!!!
omg..........

(13,390 posts)One hasn't wanted to leave her home and is very adamant in discouraging her kids and grandkids from being a part of any of the actions because she wants to keep them safe. The idea that it takes effort to be safe in America is completely foreign to me. I learned as an adult that it is not entirely possible for people of color. But, knowing it intellectually is one thing, the full extent of it can only register if it is the life a person lives.
I am baffled that it is still not getting through. I can't begin to estimate what it will take for more white people to make an effort to understand.

(7,234 posts)It was like going back in time to 1950's America.
It was bizarre and hilarious.

(13,390 posts)It makes me sad and angry.

(3,208 posts)I, too, live among some who would think that way.
These are the ones who have been convinced that they have to be fighting against the people who they really are on the same side with. They believe that the black people are living some great life on welfare, and that is why they themselves are having it so hard.
The 1% wants to keep it that way.
I have seen some changes where I live (just southwest of St. Louis), and I think it will keep changing, but there are some deep pockets in this country that may never change.
(Thanks for posting this. I was trying to find info. about that march!)

(13,390 posts)One even told me he's a member of the KKK, and I have every reason to believe him. For some, the 1% just reminds them that there are at least some people to whom they are superior.

But I'll ignore it.

(13,390 posts)No one should have to listen to the hate and drivel that I come across. Keeping my mouth shut at family events can be exhausting.

(3,919 posts)poor white families and the majority of them would have joined the hecklers. but, the ugliest hateful persons are the handful of working class and wealthy retired. and my own family - & we are working class people of color! i don't understand the hate and the intensity of this hate.
you are so right, loyalsister. it is exhausting. i watched rev. al during the press conference with the garner family and we was very somber and subdued. later, on another program he was strong and focused. his leadership is a true light and it was encouraging to hear his righteous word of truth. (can't remember whether it was lawrence or rachel's program).

(13,390 posts)I grew up in the 70s and 80s when there were still a lot of growing pains after the Civil Rights act was passed. My school was still voluntarily segregated and I was discouraged from having black friends. Even as a child it bothered me. As I have gotten older and seen some positive movement forward in that interracial friendship were natural and common. I remember in the mid 2000s, I met someone who told me that she disapproved of interracial dating. I had not heard that from anyone fore so many years that I was stunned. After I mentioned it to a couple of people, I started to think she would be a pariah for thinking that way.
When Obama was elected I was elated. And then he took office and the backlash started. I really was dumbfounded to see how racists so many people in this country are. As evidence and incidents continue to acquire, I feel like we haven't even begun to see just how robust and widespread it is.
Odin2005
(53,521 posts)...but given people's actual racist behavior I wonder if a lot of those people were telling the pollster what they they thought was socially appropriate, not what they actually believed.

A lot of these folks would like nothing more than blacks to be killed.
Not hilarious at all.
