I AM EDITING AT THE TOP, BECAUSE I WAS WRONG ABOUT THE CAR-YEAR ..IT HAD TO HAVE BEEN A LINCOLN NAVIGATOR..
We are not car people, and obviously I remembered the exact vehicle incorrectly (it has been a few years) .. It was a brand new top of the line vehicle at the time..and old folks like me automatically assume "Cadillac"....mea culpa.. I'll not edit the title because the posts below make no sense if I do.. I'll happily take my lumps for my ,mistake. ....SCD

When my son (the white kid) was a junior in high school (1997), he and 4 friends went on their merry way to a Laker's game.. They had only gone about 30 minutes down the road when the driver saw the lights & heard the "whoop".
The trooper approached the car, gun drawn, and asked the driver for his drivers' license & registration. He made him turn on the overhead light , and asked if there was a gun in the glove box. Of course there was no gun, but the officer took offense at the "tone" when the driver answered him.
He then told the others to get out of the car and put their hands on the vehicle. By this time, another trooper had shown up, and as my son started to exit the car, he was told to stay in the car. Being 17, and seeing his friends getting hassled, he mouthed off, and was told that he could wait in the Escalade Navigator or in the back seat of the cop car..
The cops asked them to empty their pockets, and the driver was questioned about why his name was not the same as on the registration.. It was his Dad & Mom's car (same last name)..
These kids were basically detained briefly for "driving erratically" (but mostly for DWB)
My son was pissed because if he stood up for his football teammates, he was likely to be put in a cop car and then what?..and it killed him to see them being rousted for nothing.
The second cop to arrive, left, and the original one told them to drive carefully, and did not ticket them..
The general consensus was that 4 black teens in a new Escalade Navigator, had to mean that they stole it..

(9,933 posts)while attending a reception at Cal Arts in 1994. Was seated in the back of the car and my two friends were in the front. We were pulled over and the driver (black) and front seat passenger (hispanic) were made to exit the vehicle, searched and harassed while the cops told me to stay in the car. Thought it was racist then, still think so now. No ticket, no one was doing anything wrong.

(115,677 posts)he was not? Why do cops so often instigate shit? Or try and make shit worse than it is? That is a rhetorical question.

When he tried to exit he was told he could stay in the car or be put in the back of the police car

(115,677 posts)They searched the 4 black kids, not the 1 white kid. wtf.
I wonder if he wasn't along, if his friends would've been harassed more? I know it's been like this, it is getting way more blatant.

(103,856 posts)another time our son was in Penneys with 2 black friends and his girlfriend (Asian/Black),and when they were about to leave, they were stopped by security & asked for their receipts..they showed them, but were still escorted back to the department to be identified by the clerk..
To this day he will not shop at Penneys

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadillac_Escalade
The Cadillac Escalade is a full-size luxury SUV engineered and manufactured by General Motors and marketed under the Cadillac brand. It was Cadillac's first major entry into the popular SUV market. The Escalade was introduced for the 1999 model year in response to German and Japanese competitors and to Ford's 1998 release of the Lincoln Navigator. The Escalade project went into production only ten months after it was approved. The Escalade is built in Arlington, Texas. The name Escalade refers to a siege warfare tactic of scaling defensive walls or ramparts with the aid of ladders or siege towers.
The 1999 Escalade was identical to the 1999 GMC Denali, but was redesigned for the 2002 model year to make its appearance fall more in line with Cadillac's "art and science" design theme. Escalade production went on hiatus for the 2001 model year. The Escalade ESV (based on the Chevrolet Suburban) and its former sibling the Escalade EXT (based on the Avalanche sport utility truck) were made in Silao, Mexico, before the 2007 redesign; the new Escalade ESV is sourced from Arlington, Texas.
Perhaps the OP didn't mean to outright lie but was mistaken either with the year (typo maybe) or with the model of car. I'll leave it to the OP to explain.

(103,856 posts)It was a luxury model SUV..obviously not a Caddy.. so sorry.. It must have been a Lincoln Navigator..
We drive older used cars, so I am not very car-conscious

(9,463 posts)someone and I don't know the model of some relevant vehicle, I'll offer something that is similar to the one I'm referring to or say it was an SUV, or two-door sports car, or pickup truck, for example.
My ability to ramble off car models off the top of my head (and even if I'm looking right at one) stops at about 1982, lol.
