(3,517 posts)"How can he say he can't breath if he can't breath?"
In that circumstance "can't" is akin to saying "having difficulty" only it's shorter and universally understood. Well, universally understood until someone is trying to justify murder.
Poor police. Yeah, right. Boo hoo.

"If you can't speak? ...we'll know you're dead".

I would say "I can't breathe."

(40,656 posts)suck. Only bad ones do. Same with cops. Fuck them if they can't tell the difference.

(11,481 posts)and getting rid of the "bad" ones, then they're complicit in the acts perpetrated by the bad ones. Silence is complicity.
IOW, I'll grant that there are good cops when I see some bad cops ousted and neutralized by these so-called "good" cops. Until then, they're ALL bad cops. Some actively bad and the rest passively bad.

(18,186 posts)Working 8 years in emergency rooms as a respiratory tech, this I witnessed... people will come in saying they 'cannot breathe' and when plugged up to monitors, lo and behold, they aren't breathing properly, because their O2 saturation will be in the lo 80's or worse.
Yes, they can wheeze out the words. Are they perfusing and getting proper oxygen to keep them from dying? No.
So people can say "i can't breathe" and they truly cannot catch their breath, especially if asthma or COPD are part of the picture.
But I love how cops are now also licensed to dispense medical diagnoses! That will really save communities on health care costs!

If their feelings ARE hurt, then these protests are successful, something finally got to them, even if it's not what it should be.

- Not a crime in any jurisdiction
2. Eric Garner was in poor health
- Not a crime in any jurisdiction
3. He was a nuisance to shop owners
- Ok, so he was annoying. Still not a crime.
4. He allegedly sold untaxed cigarettes
-This might be a misdemeanor, if true and the prosecutor was having a slow week
5. He resisted arrest
- more serious ... but
...NOT A CAPITAL OFFENSE.
God Almighty, and that's just the first paragraph.
Where do they find writers like this?
Still waiting for somebody to explain to me how a wheezing guy held down by three other cops is a deadly threat to anyone.

(25,699 posts)It's akin to your meter running out, as far as the law is concerned.
And "resisting arrest" is a fucking joke, especially when there is no cause for the arrest. You don't get arrested for violations. And what person ISN'T going to resist being thrown to the ground and choked in the course of an unwarranted arrest?

(31,464 posts)I took journalism courses in school. The Five W's in the first paragraph. WTF is this shit? I've read more thought-provoking, in-depth reporting in high school newspapers. But then, reporters' jobs were notoriously low-paying back in the old days. Now they're probably lucky to make $5/hr plus tips. And we wonder why there is no "news." If you don't have blonde hair and large breasts, you aren't qualified to read a Fox "News" TelePrompTer.

(25,699 posts)The AP published title of the article is "Police: Chokehold victim complicit in own death." It's still a gross sack of apologetics with lots of input from the police unions, Peter King, directors of "police studies," etc.

(45,251 posts)The next thing I knew, it was a month later; and I was still in the hospital, with a tracheotomy tube in my throat.
So, I can say unequivocally that saying you can't breathe does NOT mean you can breathe after all.
These people may be conflating the test for choking to death with the inability to oxygenate. If you seem to be choking, supposedly the test is to see if you can talk. If you can't talk, you need a Heimlich. (I say "supposedly" because I am not a medical professional. This is just what I've heard.) However, again, I can tell you from catastrophic experience that a person about to pass out (or worse) from lack of oxygen can say "I can't breathe" and be 100% correct. So, if someone says to you "I can't breathe," do NOT assume they can. Do what my sister did. Call 911.*
I can't believe how irresponsible people can be to say otherwise in a newspaper.
*ETA: And, if you know CPR, start CPR. My sister did not know CPR. But I am not trying to give medical advice here, beyond saying it's bs that saying "I can't breathe" means you can breathe, nor am I qualified to give medical advice.

(1,151 posts)All media is corporate owned thanks to the saint of corporate America. They have to support the authoritarian state. The celebrities who represent the corporate view masquerading as reporters are to blame. They are the mouth piece for the modern fascist who have perverted our electorate to such a point that KKK a hole openly admit to their ignorance. To a point where bigots double down on their ignorance because they feel safety,in numbers.
They must be constantly marginalized by the sane people. Its a never ending thankless job and I think we are losing.

(21 posts)In my opinion, the militarization of the police forces of the US has engendered a recruitment of people into those organizations that are aggressive, hateful and mean. They hide this behavior behind the authority of the badge. They are the minority of the police organization that give the whole of the organization a bad name. There is a small minority that account for a significant portion of these incidents (reference this study in NYC). Unless and until way to weed these types out and/or punish them for their behavior is undertaken, this stuff will continue. Unfortunately.
