NYPD Chief Bratton defends Mayor de Blasio and criticizes officers funeral protest

The commissioner of the New York Police Department, Bill Bratton, has given strong backing to Bill de Blasio, denouncing the protest of rank-and-file officers who turned their back on the mayor at a weekend funeral as politicised and inappropriate.
Speaking on CBS on Sunday, the leader of the largest police force in the US came out fighting on behalf of the beleaguered politician who appointed him.
This is a mayor who cares very deeply about New York police officers, cares very deeply about the divide in the city and is working hard to heal that divide, Bratton said.
De Blasio has faced expressions of open hostility from New Yorks police unions since two officers were killed last weekend. On Saturday a cordon of officers turned their back on the mayors image as it was being screened outside Christ Tabernacle church in Queens, where de Blasio was addressing the funeral of one of the murdered officers , Rafael Ramos.
Bratton condemned the silent protest of the police officers. I certainly dont support that action, he said. That funeral was held to honor officer Ramos, and to bring politics into that event was very inappropriate.

(50,254 posts)I've noticed that police ethics seems to be a fairly common subject of discussion on that show, which makes it a bit more interesting than I was expecting anything with Tom Selleck to be.

(7,906 posts)What the officers did at the funeral was obviously wrong, but I'm so very glad the commissioner said this, and I'm happy that he has the mayor's back.

(30 posts)Stop and frisk started when he became Giuliani's top cop. Anything he says by way of "criticizing" the rank and file NYPD is no more than lip service in my opinion . He is simply trying to keep his well paid and cushy job . . .
Ill begin to believe Bratton when he steps in front of a microphone and admits that there are some bad cops out there . Until then . . . meh

(7,234 posts)While he was chief in Los Angeles he ended the practice of LAPD shooting at moving vehicles after 13 year old Devin Brown was gunned down back in 2005 after backing . He told officers that they can jump out the way, the unions threw a fit but this policy saved a lot of lives.

(12,754 posts)Is that aren't these cops the same ones who requested no protests until after the funeral? The, they go and use the funeral itself to take a cheap, unprofessional (and quite possibly racist) shot at the mayor. Of course, the NYPD has been a hotbed of thuggery for decades.
