It’s all but official: Republicans sent Brad Ashford to Capitol Hill

If there was any doubt—and there wasn’t a lot—it’s now all but official: the GOP’s Lee Terry lost to Democrat Brad Ashford because plenty of Republican voters turned their back on their eight-term incumbent Congressman.

Just 18 months ago, Republican Jean Stothert rolled into the mayor’s office with landslide support from west Omaha’s GOP strongholds. Terry won those same parts of town over Ashford but was nowhere near Stothert’s totals, according to a Nebraska Watchdog analysis of recently released precinct-by-precinct vote totals.

In Omaha’s heavily Republican Wards 5, 6 and 7, Terry was double-digits short of Stothert’s blowout numbers. In Ward 5 alone, Terry came up 17 points shy of Stothert’s final figure.

Here are the specifics:

Ward 5 (Southwest Omaha): Stothert: 72% of the total vote, Terry 55%
Ward 6 (West Omaha): Stothert: 66% of the total vote, Terry 54%
Ward 7 (Northwest Omaha): Stothert: 66% of the total vote, Terry 51%
