When the Capitalists and Republicans plot and wage war on workers and the 99% for 40 years and for all this time the Democrats and Labor Unions fail to realize or refuse to realize that there is a war against them, and liberals and progressives for all this time refuse to unite and fight or take it as seriously as fighting a war, should anyone really be surprised at the state of affairs of things economically nowadays?

(23,500 posts)Organized labor used to be our base, until 1980 when way too many union members voted for Reagan. That was the beginning of the end. Reagan and the GOP realized they could destroy organized labor without any repercussions because much of the working class cared more about "God, guns and gays" than about their own pay and working conditions.
Too bad for them. Too bad for the rest of us too.
carter got half the union vote in 1980, Reagan got 43%. That's 13% down from what carter got in '76, but still a majority. Carter lost a lot of categories of votes in 1980, e.g. white collar votes (40% in '80 v. 50% in '76), not just union votes. Carter was widely perceived as a failure for various reasons, mainly the gas shocks I think. Nothing specific to union members.

(111,339 posts)but hey, Reagan was just such a nice guy and he'd never do anything to harm the country and Stupid was a guy you wanted to have a beer with and Clinton was a Democrat who'd look out for our interests because all Democrats are liberals, blah blah blah.
