Angry conservative protesters disrupted the Texas Muslim Capitol Day celebration in Austin on Thursday, repeatedly shouting No Sharia and screaming Go home.
The celebration was organized by the Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, and according to their website, the event was an opportunity for community members to learn about the democratic political process and how to be an advocate for important issues. The group largely consisted of Muslim students and children, along with faith leaders.
The event was protested by a group calling itself the Patriot Defense Foundation Inc., who claimed that CAIR sought to create a climate in which it would be able to take over America, destroying it for Americans (who) believe in the Constitution and what this country was founded on.
Local reporters said protesters shouted Islam is a lie! at Muslim children when they were singing the National Anthem. One protester reportedly shouted: Theres no twilight in Sharia!

(12,977 posts)Freshman state Rep. Molly White, R-Belton, is not in Austin today to celebrate Texas Muslim Capitol Day. But she left instructions for the staff in her Capitol office on how to handle visitors who are, including asking them to declare allegiance to the United States.
"I did leave an Israeli flag on the reception desk in my office with instructions to staff to ask representatives from the Muslim community to renounce Islamic terrorist groups and publicly announce allegiance to America and our laws," she posted on Facebook. "We will see how long they stay in my office." . . .
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has sent a letter to House Speaker Joe Straus asking whether White had violated ethics rules by instructing her staff to ask Muslim visitors to her office to declare their allegiance to the United States.
"Our ethics question is: Has Rep. White violated any House rules in creating such an internal office policy that is selectively being enforced to discriminate against certain religious minorities trying to meet with her or her staff?" the letter asks. "Are House members prohibited from making constituents take oaths before meeting with their elected representatives or House staff?"

Many of the slaves brought over were Muslims.
I remember when I went to fort Jesus in Mombasa Kenya. I went to the quarters where the captured slaves were chained. On the wall Arabic script was scraped into the beams by those poor souls.
BTW, slave owners forbade slaves from practicing their native religions. They also took their names away and gave them new names, usually reflecting the owner's surname. Cassius Clay's family was owned by one of Henry Clay's relatives. Muhammed Ali was how Cassius Clay threw off the last vestiges of his slave heritage

Please do not confuse the extremist with the philosophy. It is sad that ignorant people can be so easily frightened by "The other" , whoever that other may be, because that same fear response shuts off the thinking process. Peace be upon all of you.

(37,449 posts)why of course most religions hijack from each other and profess it as original.
Leviticus 24:16 And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death.

(37,748 posts)I think the more accurate and objective term is 'acculturation' rather than hijack-- a process which incorporates, in a addition to religion, all human traditions, from entertainment and diet practices to fashions and community civic practices.
Though I imagine there are people who will maintain that the an evening dinner of pizza and wine has been hijacked from the Babylonian Empire and China respectively...

(20,018 posts)If people have a problem with the teachings of Islam then they're bigots and hypocrites?
So the only good people are the ones who agree with Islam (and it's treatment of women, etc)?
Is that what you're saying?
Violet_Crumble
(35,961 posts)1. A few days ago I spotted someone posting that in response to someone talking about anti-Muslim bigotry in the US.
2. This current OP supplies a very blatant and ugly example of anti-Muslim bigotry in the US. Those who are doing it do claim they merely have a problem with the teachings of Islam, but it's very clear that they're not merely doing that, they're adding in what makes it bigotry, which is stereotyping all Muslims.
3. I wondered if the DUer who posted the thing I mentioned a few days ago would rethink what they said after seeing this and the related incident where that Teabagger politician insisted any Muslim visiting her office had to swear an oath of allegiance to the US using an Israeli flag.
To say what I'm saying just a bit more - I'm an atheist so having a healthy dislike of religion is inbuilt for me. Where I draw the line is when I see people using hate and stereotypes against any minority group or holding one minority to a standard they don't hold themselves or others to.
THAT was what I was saying...

normal people can find fault with what religion teaches
Violet_Crumble
(35,961 posts)This bunch have only gained notoriety over the past 24hrs with that really ugly stunt. But when it comes to finding fault with what religion teaches, I'd say those who can only do it by focusing on one religion and using sources that are acknowledged hate sites (eg religionofpeace.com, barenakedislam.com etc) and fixate on 'teaching' others that moderate Muslims are a tiny minority amongst Muslims, or turn around and blame European Muslims for the hate aimed at them by extreme RW groups, those folk are bigots as they clearly move far beyond finding fault with religion to the dangerous and ugly territory of stereotyping Muslims as a whole.
Disliking those who aren't like them is an ignorant trait that while much more common and coarse amongst the Right, does seep into the Left at times. Antisemitism, racism, homophobia and sexism are all ones along with anti-Muslim bigotry that get more traction than they should amongst a small number of left-wingers who should know better

Eventually, they went after Veterans' funerals and that's when they finally got some push back. Of course by then, society had allowed them to normalize such behavior and thus paved the way for these fucks to scream at children.

Seems weird. I know a lot of folks want to pile on the Christians for some of the stuff their religion has done for millennia, but this story may (or may not) be wrong in some respects.
