Only one thing bad. I was hoping for an overtime game. But just WOW!
Congrats both teams on probably one of the best Super Bowl games.
WOW!

(8,028 posts)Unfuckingbelievable. What in the fuckety fuck? Who in the fuck called a pass play, one half of a yard from the endzone on first down? It doesn't make sense. Did the Seahawks quarterback get paid to throw the game?... Crazy.

(8,419 posts)100 percent on the play call. The Packers did some stupid things in the championship game. This was just pure coaching ignorance. Watch the play. The defensive player immediately breaks on the ball and makes a great play. But he never should have had the opportunity. Most logical call is to pound Lynch into the lines, no way New England stops that that three times. If you want to call a pass play, then leave Lynch in the backfield (they didn't and tipped them off that it was either a pass or a QB run) fake a dive into the line by Lynch and throw the ball outside.
Instead they ran what a best could be called purely ignorant. A pick play so two NE players were in the same area, what if the defensive player didn't jump on the play, the ball still could have bounced off the Seahawk and two NE players are in the area.

(8,028 posts)...could have fainted and still fallen into the endzone from the 1/2 yard line for a touchdown. Calling a pass play on first down and inches was beyond belief and so truly unbelievable that it is not to be believed. Someone made money on that play call... I'm just not sure who.

(8,419 posts)but your point stands, try three run plays is option one. If you are going to throw, roll Wilson out with the option of running or throwing to the corner of the end zone where your player gets it or the ball is out of bounds.
...it was? Thanks for the correction. But still,... Worst.Play.Ever.

(42,714 posts)He tried it five times this year and only succeeded once. Over the past five years, he has one of the worst records running in the ball from the one (less than 50 percent success rate). And this was the 109th time a pass was thrown from the one yard line this season. And the only time the ball was intercepted.
I didn't know those numbers so like everyone else I couldn't make sense out of the call. But while its a bad call in hindsight (and the type of pass play really made no sense -- at very least, a roll out and pass to the corner would seem like a safer play), it's not as entirely crazy as it seemed now that I know the numbers. (Indeed, Lynch had been stopped earlier in the game on a third and one play from inside the ten).

(11,175 posts)I thought it was about 20 seconds left and only one timeout remaining.
If so, three run plays isn't an option, but a possibility would be: run on second down, if no TD call a timeout, then on third down either run (your final play) or try a quick pass which, if incomplete, will stop the clock and let you try the second run on fourth down.

(8,419 posts)And a time out, so they should have been able to get a call off easily by 30 seconds, call time out and then run option, then run.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)They had 50 seconds after the catch, but then on first and goal from the 5 they gave it to Lynch who got to the 1, right? (See, I'm lazily relying on my memory and looking to you for additions or corrections.) So on second down, when they called the pass, they no longer had 50 seconds.
The catch was for 30+ yards so I can believe it took everyone a while to get downfield and line up for the first-down play. Then there's the time to run the play (for the gain of 4), after which neither team stopped the clock (a decision on Belichick's part for which he's been criticized, and if Seattle had scored maybe that would be the big issue). If they're looking at second and goal from the 1 with 26 seconds left and one remaining time-out, I don't think it's clear that they can get off three running plays.

(2,068 posts)They deflate footballs for the past 8 years and then the Seahawks call a stupid pass play when you've got the horse to shove it right down their throat. Just fucking disgusted.
Chris Colinsworth alluded to the NFL deflated football investigation after the game. Heads should roll. Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and one or two equipment personnel are flat out fucking liars when they profess ignorance on why 11 of 12 of their own footballs are under inflated vs the Colts. This isn't about one game, it's about many dozens(hundreds) of games where your team gains an advantage because your QB and receivers and running backs have better grip on the ball and therefore your team has other worldly low turnover numbers vs the rest of the NFL.

(11,833 posts)Congratulations to the New England Patriots. They were the better team and deserve the Super Bowl victory.
Having rooted for the Seahawks, I'm glad they played well. They sure had an opportunity to win the game, right there at the end!
Thanks for starting a thread about the Super Bowl that isn't negative. I thoroughly enjoyed the game!
I got all 10 play off games right. But on the super bowl the teams matched up so well I keep switching. So I flipped a coin. If heads, I would pick Seattle. Tails and I'd go for Pats. It was heads. So I went with Seattle, 27 to 24 in OT. It was nut a confidence pick like the other 10. It was a guess!
What I did hope for was over time. But damn if that wasn't a great game.
