There's a new front runner in Iowa -- and it's not the expected favorite
SALON STAFF
Jeb Bush has some work to do in Iowa. The former Florida governor, and the 2016 favorite of the GOPs establishment and Wall Street class, is struggling in a new poll, with favorability and unfavorability numbers roughly even.
Theres also a surprising front-runner on the move. Thats Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, riding a wave of energy off a well-received speech last weekend at a freedom conference sponsored by Rep. Steve King.
And theres bad news for Chris Christie below, who has the highest negatives of any Republican in the poll.
Here are the results of the latest Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register poll:
Scott Walker: 15 percent
Rand Paul: 14 percent
Mitt Romney: 13 percent
Mike Huckabee: 10 percent
Ben Carson: 9 percent
Jeb Bush: 8 percent
Ted Cruz: 5 percent
Rick Santorum: 4 percent
Chris Christie: 4 percent
Marco Rubio: 3 percent
Rick Perry: 3 percent
Bobby Jindal: 2 percent
Carly Fiorina: 1 percent
John Kasich: 1 percent:
Donald Trump: 1 percent

That entire family should be extirpated root and branch from the US political system. and in perpetuity.

(10,500 posts)Gephardt won the caucuses in 1988, but in 2004 he came in fourth place and dropped out. I think Huckabee will take 4th after Walker, Bush and Paul and then exit the race.
Huckabee can't raise money. Besides, the religious right wants a tea party guy, or at least a de facto tea party guy.

(25,704 posts)He is not stupid. He had a winning persona. He knows exactly how the electorate is divided and how to maximize his votes. He has been under investigation for years and nothing has stuck yet - but keep trying!
Hillary v Walker. And I think Walker wins.

When I try to think of a Republican I could tolerate, the only name that comes to mind is John Huntsman.

Beady-eyed shitweasel Walker scares me. He's a wholly-owned creature of the Kochtopus.

(3,431 posts)that they did not want Romney either, but the party
elite got him nominated anyway.
As bad as it looks for him right now, with the right
connections and Wall Street, I think that he will be
nominated.

it's how romney won the nomination last time.

(15,429 posts)It's better visuals to concede it to the crazies than to try to compete there.
Remember, Pat Robertson did better than George H.W. Bush in Iowa, and Dole took the caucuses. Bush's brother took it in 2000, but he talked the god shit well and Iowa Republican go in for that sort of grifting. It'll be difficult for a Catholic to match a Huckabee, Walker, or a Cruz there.

Not a great indicator one way or the other.

(7,412 posts)Ron Paul and Rick Santorum beat Romney there in 2012.
Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, and Fred Thompson beat McCain there in 2008.
Jeb being in 3rd or 4th place means nothing at this point and he isn't even campaigning there as far as I know, because frankly, Iowa doesn't mean much to some Republican front runners because it doesn't indicate what the larger states will do, the ones that really matter.
It is good publicity for an underdog to do well there of course.
