Worst call in the history of the game at any level.
I wouldnt expect to see that in high school.
2nd and goal from the 4 yard line with a minute to play and you DONT hand the ball off to the best short yardage runner in the game?

He was stunned at that call, like I was.

(32,886 posts)Pats a chance. Without it, the Seahawks have another 1st down in Patriots territory in field goal range. If they burned up the max time for three downs and kicked a field goal, the Pats would not have had time to drive down field.

Did head coach have to approve it?

(42,714 posts)Lynch had attempted to score from the one yard line five times this season. He succeeded only once. (Over the past five years, he's been successful running the ball into the end zone from the one yard line less than half the time, making him one of the worst in the league at that particular play).
In addition, league wide, 108 passes were thrown this season when the ball was at the one yard line. Not one of them resulted in an interception. Until the 109th attempt.
That doesn't mean it was the "right" call -- the results in hindsight make it clear it wasn't. But it wasn't so obviously the "wrong" call at the time it was made.

(42,714 posts)Including me. And obviously, in hindsight, it was the wrong call. But the coaches for Seattle would assuredly be aware of how bad Lynch was at punching the ball in from the one, even though none of us (or anyone else commenting on the call) may have been aware of it. With that information, it's not as ridiculous a call as it seemed at first. (Keep in mind also that Lynch had failed earlier on a third and one call).

(5,018 posts)They had 3 downs, I say use two of them to run and one to pass.
But the pass risks an interception and to run the pass play on the first of what can be 3 plays, makes NO sense to me, but I am not an NFL coach.
So whatever, but doesnt that make sense?

(42,714 posts)But if you figure that there is a one in five chance Lynch is unsuccessful on second down, and if he fails you probably have to use your last time out (with under twenty seconds to go). And then you have to decide whether to risk running on third down knowing that if you don't get it in, you don't have time to get the right personnel on the field to try a pass on fourth down. What are the odds of Lynch being stopped three times in a row? Probably not that great, but then again, his track record isn't confidence inducing on that particular play.
If it was me, knowing what I now know, I still would have gone with the run or at very least with a play action fake, roll out and throw to the corner. But given all of the facts, its not as outlandish a call as it first seemed. Still outlandish, but not necessarily the worst call in the history of the game.
