(7,815 posts)It's not how many years of school you've finished, or which church you went to with your family, or what part of the country you grew up in, or what field or industry you work in. Lots of men in the Navy are sexists (Tailhook), but Jimmy Carter started his working life in the Navy, and he's not sexist. Lots of politicians, many of them Republicans, but not all, are sexists, but Jimmy Carter isn't. Lots of Southern Baptists are sexists, but Jimmy Carter isn't. Mr. Carter has written more than 29 books (Wikipedia is listing 29 books not including the historical novel I read to my mother), and one of the ornaments of his presidency was his policy of withholding various kinds of aid from human rights violators around the world. (Of course we can't do that any more without being laughed at, but that's by the by.)
So, what explains Jimmy Carter? Perhaps an undimmed idealism, which believes that peace is possible. Perhaps being married, once and forever, it appears, to a strong, intelligent, capable woman who maybe didn't let him get away with sloppy thinking about women.
It would be fun to write him a letter and ask. Maybe I will.

(24,576 posts)She was a feminist when being a feminist wasn't cool...or even heard of. She also didn't tolerate racism and started him off right there. President Carter's book, A Remarkable Mother, is a wonderful tribute to her.
