New law passed in PA, "Revictimization Relief Act," could endanger press freedom in the state
A worrying new law passed in Pennsylvania called the "Revictimization Relief Act" could endanger press freedom in the state. The law provides for the suppression of speech by people who have been convicted of a personal injury crime if that speech will cause victims or their families "a temporary or permanent state of mental anguish." The statute is now being challenged in a complaint that refers to the law as the "Silencing Act" and contends that the law amounts to an unconstitutional prior restraint. One of the concerns that has been raised is a chilling effect on the press, which will burden journalists who speak to sources that have been convicted of violent crimes.
