Shirley Manson Blasts "Petty" Kanye West for Beck Grammys Insult: "Grow Up"
It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry.
You disrespect your own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent, hard work and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like BECK.
You make yourself look small and petty and spoilt.
In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own.
Grow up and stop throwing your toys around.
You are making yourself look like a complete twat.
Ps.I am pretty certain Beyonce doesn't need you fighting any battles on her account. Seems like she's got everything covered perfectly well on her own.

She was pretty big in the alternative rock field back in the 90's-outspoken, very well informed. Very much a self-identified feminist.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)She has to know how it is used here. She has been here many times. I have not seen where is is acceptable for Scottish feminists to use that word. I will look it up to see if scottish feminists approve of calling people female body parts.
I would say the same if the word was directed at her.
xmas74
(29,674 posts)She'd flinch at any mention of "b" or even "c" but twat? She doesn't even think about it because it's so common. She doesn't even associate it with a part of the female anatomy but instead thinks of it as another word for idiot. She has to be reminded that here in the US we consider that word to be a bit more taboo.
Sometimes we just have to think of where the person is from and move on. Did she mean it as an insult? Yes, but not on the level you've taken it to be. I'm also thinking that, if the word were aimed at her she probably wouldn't care.
Personally, I'm more offended by how Kayne felt as though Beyonce needed to be defended. She's a strong, powerful woman who can defend herself and she didn't need a man jumping in to do it for her. It seems to me that she felt that there was no reason to be defensive-she lost an award, nothing else. His action of jumping in and "defending" her when not asked to do so could easily seen as being demeaning, at least in the point of view of this feminist.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)He said nothing there he has not said many times before about her. I think she can tell him her feelings herself.
I would never use words about another person that was culturally unacceptable in their nation, even if we share the same language. They use unnaceptable words for race there too, and I would not accept that either.
If her point was to speak on his rudeness, during which he called no one names, by calling him a twat, it fell flat to me. I did search and it seems they use it alot over there and some are angry with feminists for speaking out against the use of twat and cunt to describe people. I'll continue looking.
It's like the word cracker for me. Some people think it's acceptable and will not stop using it. I cannot use it. My mouth just won't make the word come out unless it's a an actual cracker.
xmas74
(29,674 posts)and I've told them to sit down and shut up-I can defend myself. I'm a proud, strong feminist who doesn't want to be treated like a fragile princess or a defenseless baby. The way he jumped in was wrong on more than one level. Someone close to him needs to tell him to stop unless otherwise asked to do so. Jumping in like he did gave off the vibe of her not being able to defend herself over something that didn't need defending.
Not everything language-wise is so Americentric.Try as we like we sometimes forget this. Sometimes we need to move on. It's a word that we personally don't use and was probably not used in the way that you've decided it was.
Beyonce is an intelligent woman. I'm sure she can handle her own without others jumping in for her. I'm also pretty sure that she knows when she needs help and how to ask for it. This was not one of those times.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Or just th gossip and the show? He speaks about the issue he was talking about all the time. Most of it was not about her at all. I was about the show itself and how the awards are given out. His problem has been talked into the ground for years in Black media. The only way anybody notices is for the week after ge does something like this, then on to the all white oscars, and he'll complain about that and nobody will even care. If he's a twat, so is anybody calling him a twat. He should protest whenever he wants. If people think Beyonce can defend herself, then why are they defending her themselves by calling her friend a twat? Bullshit excuse. She doesn't need Kanye to defend her or Shelly to defend her.

(29,674 posts)I'm not going by what the media has reported. My kid wanted to watch it, so we watched it.
BTW-my daughter is fourteen and she knows who Beck is. Her response? "Solid choice-not too mainstream." She was more disappointed by alternative going to St Vincent instead of alt-j or Cage the Elephant. She was also rooting for Hozier over Sam Smith but I told her in advance it wasn't going to happen. (I do have to admit that I love that song by Hozier-beautiful, haunting song.)
Also, this entire thing is about Album of the Year. Album of the Year is awarded not just to the artist but to the producer, recording engineer and master engineer for the entire album. Song of the year goes to the songwriter themselves, not the artist. Record of the Year goes to the artist, the producer, the mixer or recording engineer for one track. Kayne should know the difference which is why his actions were silly. There were far more people involved than just Beyonce vs Beck. I know he did it to get his point across in the spotlight but it just doesn't fit.

But imagine being Beck. You just won the biggest honor of your entire career for a work of artistry you take seriously, and a fellow artist decides to take your shining moment as an opportunity to demonstrate to the world that you dont deserve it?
But Beck isnt the only person West insulted. In awarding Beck, the Grammy voters had spoken en masse. What right does West have to appropriate the forum theyve chosen to give the award as a soapbox to declare his dissent?
To his credit, Beck played it off goodnaturedly in the moment by inviting West jokingly to stay onstage. And though in his own post-show comments hes made clear he bears no grudge against West, you have to wonder how he really feels in hindsight given the brazen insult West not only publicly paid him but then made sure to clarify in comments after the show.
....
But wheres the outrage? At the very least, it would be good to see some of Wests fellow artists speak out against him if NARAS doesnt plan to go there. Because what happened to Beck today could just as easily happen to them tomorrow.
Maybe next time it wont even be West that delivers the insult. Perhaps hell embolden another artist to up the ante next time and try an even more offensive stunt. Theres a slippery slope here thats getting greased by the silence of the artistic community. This is not just about the West incident itself but the precedent it could set.

What I find fascinating about Millennials is that technology is CONSTANTLY at their fingertips, but they seem to be clueless about so many things. A couple of 20-something coworkers -- at their smart phones every chance they get -- were completely in the dark as to the Paris shootings, and the killing of the Jordanian pilot.
If people didn't know who Beck was, why not Google the name, rather than spout off ignorantly? Same thing when Bon Iver won for Best New Artist. It's rather depressing to think that an entire generation would need Kanye pulling a stupid stunt to help them become informed.

Hip hop has been the biggest influence on music in the last 30 years, probably because they do sample other tracks. There has been and integration that many artists ignored. Kanye is a Original. There is no artist like him, he cannot b confused with someone lse or sound like someone else. That is the beauty of Kanye. Any good singer in Beck's genre can mimic him, no problemo. Not Kanye. You're making it sound as if Millennials don't venture out of their little age-related bubble. I find that fascinating. In my 20s I was listening to way-back musicians like Jelly Roll Morton and Nina Simone, '60s, '70s, and current offerings. But this was before Corporate America tightened its grip on radio stations and the music industry. I feel fortunate for that.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I know Nina Simone. I was born in the 80 and grew up in the inner city. We had no access to even a punlic library until I was older.
We do venture out. But sometimes peopoe think their stuff was more awesome and younger popoe change the fashion to fit the times. You guys did it, now we are. There is much more past music for us to go through. 30 years more music. We hve to be selective and choose what we like. The reason the music is popular, is because its the sound of this generation. We won't like our kid's music either.
SMC22307
(8,090 posts)not commercial stations. That seems to be the dividing line -- indie vs. (what I consider) Corporate Crap.
I'm fortunate to have lived in a pre-Clear Channel world. I spent a lot of time listening to "black" DC stations, and it wasn't all CURRENT music. We had outstanding alt, classical, and classic rock stations, and a couple of cheesy pop/easy listening stations. But this was in the Dark Ages, pre-Internet. Now everyone has music at their fingertips, but seem less exposed to what's out there. It seems very insular. And we're all selective and choose what we like -- no difference between generations there.
Many of these wildly successful pop stars can't sing for shit, but CorporateAmerica decided they'd be stars, and stars they are. I find that kind of sad for an entire generation...
Violet_Crumble
(35,961 posts)Kanye falls into the mainstream, corporate crap category, while Beck's more on the indie side of things. When I was younger most of my friends hadn't ever heard the stuff I liked listening to, and that's never changed, apart from Pearl Jam who everyone's heard of, and Beck for about five minutes when Loser became a huge hit. And when I was a kid I thought Led Zeppelin was the name of an old blues guitarist or something, until I heard them and decided they were pretty crap except for 'When the Levee Breaks'.
If it was an age thing, my 22 year old daughter wouldn't like Beck or Radiohead or Blur. She didn't like the mainstream stuff on the radio, so she went looking for stuff she liked and found it. And there's people the same age as me who listen to only stuff that's played on the commercial radio stations. I got a few 'Who the hell is Beck?' ones when I was talking about it yesterday, so I gave them this link, which crosses those supposed generational boundaries...

Doesn't look like black performers are especially underrepresented in that category either. It has been awhile though (2008), I'll give you that.

(4,138 posts)Still a bit of childish ego-tripping, but a memorable moment to liven up a dull event. And Beck was clearly a good target, since he took it in stride.
Tearing down Beck after the show and totally dismissing his own artistry and contributions to our musical culture is crossing a line between childish prank, and unpardonable boorishness though. He seems to be in the "no such thing as bad publicity" camp, so you're probably right.

Everybody get a chance to be superior. I've never even seen republicans get called names like that on here. Kanye is a liberal who is on our side. Fuck calling him names. That car accident that almost killed him changed his personality. Nobody knows why. He is dealing with racism in the industry, she will never experience that. But someone may go on a sexist tirade and start calling her names one day. I'd say the same thing then. Stop calling people out of their names. Stop dehumanizing people you don't like. They save the nastiest comment for black men. Thug (richard sherman) for saying thing people don't like at a time when they don't want to hear it. Shitbird (a racist reference to black criminal suspects) twat ( a vagina, which are awesome).

Maybe you should look up 'Jesus Walks' and then decide. The man is a lyricist. And he speaks to the pain of young black american in this racist society. And apart from a 'WTF, that was random!' moment when finding out Beck won a grammy, the Grammy's are a waste of time and cater mainly to commercial crap (again I don't give a shit what the colour of the artists are). I guess some people speak out against shit that matters and others like Kanye whine about how Beyoncé should get Grammys and that Beck needs to respect artistry. What a moron.

I'm fine with speaking up about stuff, but not at the expense of Beck. Iggy Azalea, I'd be all meh about coz she isn't an artist imo, but I'd still think it was a bit rude and probably a bit embarrassing for Beyoncé...

Time, space, place perspective drives a lot of our nostalgia for music of days past.
And the 1990's - was when I really started to get deep into blues music.
Bessie Smith blows all of those girls I mentioned away. And her music is still relevant today - the skepticism and snide derision at the so-called American Dream that never existed for many groups in this country . . . it still speaks to certain segments of America today.

Twat's the same thing in the UK. Shirley Manson's Scottish so why should she be expected to cater for sensitive segments of the US population on her Facebook page? Anyway, her sentiment's spot on. To call that "pearl clutching" is itself sexist. You suggest that the objection is due to dilettante-like hyperventilating at the reference to a sexual body part. That is an insult to feminists. My dad says "blow me" or "I'll be blowed" He is not talking about oral sex, like you would accuse him of, but actually it comes from "Blow me down". As in, "I'm so surprised you could blow me over". There are many such phases that cause embarrassment. My aunt was telling me how her unmarried adult son loves his pussy. You would think the dirty old bugger loved to have sex with woman. No Pussy = cat.
Words have changed their meanings over the years. Bugger is a swear word in the UK but doesn't mean buggery anymore. In the US it can mean little child as in 'cute little bugger'. My parents couldn't stop laughing when we drove past the 'Little Buggers Daycare' here in America.

Beck handled the jab like a champion. "I was just so excited he was coming up," he told US Weekly during the Universal Music Group after-party. "[West] deserves to be onstage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?" The alt-rock icon also confirmed he wasn't offended by the rapper's post-Grammy comments: "I thought she was going to win. Come on, she's Beyonce! . . . You can't please everybody, man. I still love [West] and think he's genius. I aspire to do what he does."
There are plenty of people who complain about award shows, whether it's the Grammys or the Oscars. Yeesus just has his own way of communicating his displeasure, which some find abrasive and self-serving.
But I always admire people who speak their minds, even if their opinions aren't necessarily popular.

(1,695 posts)West shouldn't have been so rude. This is quite clear. Mason prolly coulda used a different word than "twat. See? That was easy. Falling over oneself to defend West because you like his music is about as fanboy/girl as you can get.
No I don't care for his music. It's not my thing. But I'm not getting worked up that Volbeat or We Came As Romans aren't getting play at the Grammys. Two of my favorite bands, and they nor their fans are running up on stage. It's pretty fucking obvious from his actions and words that he doesn't respect other artists. Which is odd for a man who complains he gets no respect.
So boo-fuckin-hoo for West, I'm sure his bank account will help him through this difficult time. He seems to have done quite well for a man with so many grievances. Pointing that out, I'm sure I'll be labeled a hater. Oh, well.

(5,178 posts)I've heard a couple Kanye songs that don't make me grimace in agony. I just figure I don't get it.
I do enjoy a vast variety of hip-hop music. From Mos Def, Del, Dre, Doug E. Fresh to Immortal Technique, Jasiri X, Chuck D and Madvillain.
Not this guy for some reason. But everyone says he is perhaps the greatest musical genius of modern times. Surpassing the likes of Hendrix, David Gilmour, Steve Ray Vaughn, Neil Young, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash etc. So I'm missing something.
I'll stick with Beck & Nas.

(15,330 posts)that there is a huge difference between writing and producing your own songs and actually playing a musical instrument to produce something great like Beck, and needing 4 producers, 10 songwriters, and flashy production to create what Beyoncé created.
Don't get me wrong, I think Beyoncé is very talented, but there is a difference between being a singer-songwriter, and just a singer.

(33,688 posts)Just heard on the radio this morning that Beck wrote all the music/lyrics and played all the instruments on his award-winning album whereas there were 68 people involved with the Beyonce album, presumably just on the musical end.
One's an artist, the other is an artfully packaged commercial commodity. Bet you can figure out which is which,

Kanye West has high expectations from his fans at concerts. And if you can't meet them, he's going to need to know why.
While performing in Sydney on Friday, West paused his performance to request that all audience members stand before he went on with the show. It's not unusual for an artist to ask the audience to physically participate, but West's insistence at his concert Friday led to a very uncomfortable moment.
"I've decided, I can't do this song, I can't do the rest of this show until everybody stands up," West said, adding an exception for those with handicaps. "No, seriously -- I won't go on with the show unless y'all stand up."
As video from the concert shows, West really wasn't kidding, as he took several moments to scan the audience for anyone sitting down.
When he spotted two people who still weren't standing, West initially griped, "This was the longest I've had to wait to do a song. It's unbelievable."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, one of those individuals had a prosthetic limb, and another was in a wheelchair.
After sending someone over to investigate why the two concertgoers weren't standing, West quickly clarified that "if you're using a wheelchair, then it's fine. ... Only if he's in a wheelchair."
Once he'd confirmed that those not standing really couldn't, West continued with his show.

(34,648 posts)You called me illiterate and used nasty language by calling him a shitbag and said you'd like to commit violence upon his person. After calling me illiterate, you thought nothing of it. Both he and I are Illiterate in your opinion, the only thing we have in common is our skin color. Was that the connection? Or is it perfectly acceptable to you to call people who can obviously read very well, illiterate. I'm sure my reading abilites are quite up to standard, and I felt like it was racially motivated. If it was not, I'd appreciate you thinking about how it looks when you call black people illiterate just to be hurtful and make them feel beneath you.

No matter how much she really, really deserves it, you can't steal Becky's toy and give it to Beyonce.
If the sandbox doesn't work that way, what makes him think the Grammys do?
Edit: besides, everybody who has watched the Grammys since 1980 when Pink Floyd's masterpiece was overlooked for chirpy Christopher Cross, has known that the Grammys are full of shit.

(4,138 posts)There's only a handful of men with more Grammys than Kanye, and most of them are classical conductors with really long and celebrated careers, along with Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones. Meanwhile, Beyonce is in the number 2 spot for women after Alison Krauss. Yet it's some terrible injustice when somebody else wins an award. "Small and petty and spoilt" is right on, especially considering Kanye's stature in showbiz.
I bet this whole thing is pretty embarrassing for Beyonce, even though it isn't her fault. Manson's right - this sort of behavior demeans her achievements almost as much as it does Beck's.

(29,674 posts)need him fighting any battles for her. She's a strong, powerful, intelligent, well-spoken woman with enough stage presence to more than adequately fight her own battles. The action of him jumping in and doing what she did gives the appearance of how a woman still needs a man to "defend her honor". Beyonce, otoh, was gracious, which is how both winners and losers should be.

(2,899 posts)I'd like to clear up some confusion. I'm a Brit and there might be some confusion going on in this thread.
In the UK 'twat' is pronounced differently than 'twot' and they also mean different things.
Twat means a real idiot or jerk and is pronounced so it rhymes with 'at'.
Twot means a female 'lady bits' and is pronounced so it rhymes with 'what'.
Twit means a silly person and is not a real insult at all. A person could say to their dear old grandmother, "I felt like such a twit today nana".
Bellend is the business end of a penis.
If a (common) girl was to get kicked in her privates she would bellow out that she got kicked in her twot, not twat. A twat is a person not a body part. The word twat might have meant something different in ancient times but has a different meaning now. I'm in my 60's and all my life twat has been used to describe a person such as Kenye West - not a body part.

(2,841 posts)Kanye definitely deserves criticism for his behavior at the Grammys. His arrogance is indefensible and neither his talent or skin color makes him immune from that. Plus Beyonce doesn't need him to defend her "honor" or "artistry", she's capable of doing that on her own. :/
