A Breakup Letter to Snow From the City of Boston

A Breakup Letter to Snow From the City of Boston

Dear Snow,

I could say “it’s not you, it’s me,” but that would be the biggest lie I’ve told since I promised the British they wouldn’t get shot at if they showed up by sea. It is you. It’s 100 percent you.

But it wasn’t always you. Things started off so well between us; you were so novel, so beautiful, so calming and clean when we met. Remember how exciting it was when I shut down for the first time, and we skipped school and work, and frolicked through my streets together? The way you made me feel so pretty, so refreshed, and seasonal?

I’ll never forget those wonderful first days. But that was the early stage of the relationship; now you’re dirty all the time, you never clean up after yourself, and you’ve grown even colder.

At this point, I’m just feeling...well, smothered. You won’t leave me alone. I tell you I need space and you just keep showing up. How do you not see that by always hanging around, you’re making me turn inward? I don’t even leave the house anymore because I know you’ll be waiting outside my door.

Even if you were to back off immediately, we’d still be totally over. I’m literally up to my neck in dealing with the mess you made. Because of you, I may need to borrow equipment from New York City. ...............(more)

3. We've been fortunate here in rural west Michigan, so far.

I have only been plowed out three times, all three under six inches. (I have a long driveway, much too long to hand shovel at my age, although I've done it in years past -- no more.)

I wish you little snow and a brisk, clear winter. The sun is shining here in west Michigan. The skies at night are clear, too. Sadly, it is too fucking cold to take out my telescope.

Or, remember the Groundhog Day quote, when Bill Murray quotes Checkov:

When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.

Hope you stay bundled up and keep friends close, like me.

Best regards.

Could get a restraining order but that wouldn't stop them. Neither will the Cops do anything to keep Snow from coming around again. Afraid the only solution will be to run away. Heard Snow's passport isn't valid for travel to Aruba.

but the ground was so warm from 60+ degree days lately, Lover-Boy didn't stick around.

LOL.

Love this letter; too funny.

6. Isn't snow a distinct possibility when you live in Mass?

Move somewhere down South and Mr Snow will not likely follow you here. I have a hard time sympathizing with people when they complain about weather that is common to their neighborhood. You won't hear me complain when we get 45 days of 90 degree weather with 90% humidity in July and August, it's supposed to happen here in Florida, many parts of the state are swampland. California shakes, the middle of the country is susceptible to tornadoes every year, and up north it's going to snow like a bastard some years.

7. Not this kind of snow. We have been hit hard.

Usually it comes and goes over the months of winter, but we have been slammed over a 2 week period with no end in sight. I wasn't able to go to work today because there was no public transportation! How often does a city's entire public transport system shut down? Luckily, I am able to work from home on these occasions, but not everyone is so lucky. Some people just have to go without a paycheck. It's really getting tiresome.

8. 6 feet of snow in a short period of time isn't common.

Sure it's cold and snows a lot in Boston in the winter, but they haven't had a break this year and there's nowhere to put the snow because there's so much of it. Even the most seasoned residents are DONE. I grew up in PA and can't even imagine that much snow. And it's not like it storms and is gone; that stuff sticks around until the temp gets above freezing. Not anytime soon.

I live in Texas, where we've had 60+ days of over 100 degree temps. I know it's going to happen, but I still hate it!

9. We've had six feet of snow in two weeks

That's simply not normal and is breaking all sorts of records.

This is not common.

And your lack of sympathy for people that are dying in places because of accidents, roof cave-ins that aren't designed to handle this amount of snow and the general clusterfuck of travel and business is duly noted.

10. I'm not heartless and can appreciate that this is an emergency and terrible situation

Maybe emergency officials should spend more time planning for weather disasters that are likely to happen in the region and less time and money arming their police officers as though they were an army to serve drug warrants. Plan for emergencies and react accordingly.

I went through a week long ice storm and had enough. I truly do feel sorry for you, but each area of the country comes with it's share of problems. I also appreciate and understand that not everyone can move on a whim to someplace where the weather is nicer most of the year.
