I don't care what anybody says, you're ok with me. Keep up the great work!
We may have had a shaky beginning together but you came through like a champion and for that, I thank you.

(175,735 posts)And how interesting for the people who live there. I can't imagine what it'd be like to live in a national monument. They seem very happy about it, too.

(55,147 posts)Cumberland Gap just over the mountain from Middlesboro (or now a days through the mountain). Many youngsters may not know this name but when Lee Majors parents died when he was still a baby his Aunt & Uncle raised him in Middlesboro (we went to the same high school, but many years apart), and when I was a child he would play Santa Claus every year down at the town square.
The memories, the memories.
Thank you again my friend.

(20,219 posts)I've never been there....did backpack into the Blue Ridge mountains a million years ago, though. sooooo beauteous. *sigh*
I love old time music, fiddlers circles, clawhammer banjer....

(55,147 posts)I had a Aunt that would play the auto harp on the front porch on the cool summer evenings (now that was some music!).
That's not her in the picture, just wanted you to see what it was.

(41,831 posts)I noticed they had a photo of him up on the wall. My first thought was, wow, what's going to happen in 2016.. I think we will miss him when He steps down. Its been a heck of a ride, that's for sure! (Still, the greatest day was seeing Bush get on that helicopter and leave...seems like only yesterday!)
Raine1967
(11,589 posts)The crowd around me was singing na na na na, hey hey good-bye!
BEing there was so amazing and awesome, but seeing Bush leave
that was a sight to behold.

(41,831 posts)tune to sing, when he left. I hated the Bush years, especially when Republicans would get in our face and say.."suck it, losers!" and "get over it!" when he was given the Presidency by the Supreme Court.

(11,589 posts)I thought it was funny that the helicopter flew over the crowd. I think that sealed the deal as to how many people were really glad he was finally out of office.

(11,589 posts)What a thrilling moment.
After the inauguration ended we went to the mayflower hotel bar (sadly no longer there) We lived in Georgia at the time (now live here in Alexandria)
They were watching The Rachel Maddow show. She was going thru each state and everyone was toasting their state, I got to toast Georgia
:here's to Gerogia! Our state may have gone red but our heart is still Blue!:
It's on my husbands FB page, not sure if people can see it: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1089238593179&set=vb.1292899656&type=2&theater

(81,267 posts)We weren't sure we should send him - early-on in the campaign. Why on earth fund a trip just to see Old Cranky and the Tundra Tart sworn in? But we gambled and said yes. I thought, if Barack Obama wins, THIS would be the one to tell your grandchildren about - that you were there! And he called me from there to say he'd just seen the helicopter lift off and heard all the singing! He thought it was awesome! He even sang along!

to US citizens again, Obama will have quite a legacy.
Lots more, too, but those two things are off the top of my head and stand out for me..

(26,621 posts)I believe he was the right man at the right time. I've been pretty mad at him once in a while, but for the first time in a long time, I've been proud of my First Family. They've held their heads up despite the waves of hate and stupidity that has been thrown their way, and do their jobs with grace and intelligence.

(297,240 posts)I didn't know about the one with David Axelrod's revelation.. it actually makes more sense to me.. more sense than him being against Gay Marriage.
Too bad he had to keep his thoughts on it under wraps for so long for political purposes.. So glad everything has worked out so well for going forward with Gay Marriage, DADT, DOMA, and GLBT RIGHTS and only getting stronger!

(32,062 posts)I also think it was a much bigger and more difficult job than he imagined and he did the best he could to help people where he could. Eisenhower wasn't joking around about the MIC, and the billionaires are not willingly sharing the wealth. It is going to take a lot more than one person in an oval office to make the changes we need in this country.

(5,402 posts)Thank goodness he closed Guantanamo, instituted an Apollo-style program to wean us off of foreign oil, raised the taxes on the rich, began a huge public works program, provided us all with a public option for healthcare, stopped the TPP in its tracks, and reigned in law enforcement regarding warrantless spying on innocent Americans.
Or was that a different Obama?
