Its official: The Queen of England thinks gay marriage is wonderful, according to one of Britains fellow national treasures Stephen Fry.
Fry was a guest on The Jonathan Ross Show on the 7th of February, and when speaking about his recent wedding to Elliott Spencer he revealed a rare tidbit of information about Her Majestys view on equal marriage.
Queen Elizabeth II had officially expressed her approval when signing the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in July 2013 but has avoided public comments on the matter, which is in line with Royal Protocol. The Queen must remain politically neutral. But the fact this story is being shared now, while debate on the issue rages elsewhere in the Western World is likely no accident.
It was only last summer that Her Majesty The Queen gave the Royal Assent, he said.
When the Queen signed the Royal Assent for the equal marriages act, allowing gay people to marry for the first time, she put it down and said Well, whod have thought 62 years ago when I came to the throne, Id be signing something like this? Isnt it wonderful?

(20,582 posts)She's so funny at times, and seems to treats 'common' people well. I've seen her stop and have what looked like real conversations with people in line while those behind her were trying to hurry her up. The looks she gives are hilarious, I don't think she cares what anyone thinks.

Of course, dad was too - but he doesn't count because he didn't know mom yet lol!

(29,503 posts)I believe it was in 1990 or 91? Anyway, she actually visited a resident of a public housing project, who - in turn - invited her to stay for dinner. She politely declined, but I thought that showed that deep down, she takes the concept of noblesse oblige seriously. Which doesn't mean I'd ever want to live under a monarchy, but for those who do, she's the best kind of monarch to have.
polly7
(20,582 posts)but I'd love to see her cut loose with say, the residents of a public housing project you mentioned for a whole day. I bet they'd all have a great time! That was very kind of them to invite her for dinner, I bet she appreciated it.

(10,362 posts)where privately she considers it an abomination. But she's super sensitive to opposing anything democratic lest it ramp up anti-monarchy sentiment, so she publicly supports anything parliament passes. Opposing gay marriage would remind people that Britain's monarchy is an anachronism, just like old-fashioned homophobia.
She excluded sexual orientation from a declaration of equal rights 2 years ago, right before gay marriage was passed by parliament.

(2,888 posts)the aging prom queen is describing her family to the former stoner. "Oh, my boyfriend and I were so in love when we married..." The stoner replies, "Goodness, how delightful!" The prom queen continues, "my three boys were so well-behaved, and did so well in school..." The stoner smiles and says "how quite delightful!" The aging prom queen gushes "and my oldest has grown to be so handsome, and was just accepted into a prestigious school to study to be a doctor!" The stoner nods and again says "so very delightful!"
"But what about you," asks the former prom queen, "you seem to have been so changed. What have you been up to?"
"Well, you know I had a rocky start but I eventually found the right mate and settled down. We put ourselves through school -- she became a successful businesswoman and I now have a physical therapy practice. But what really started it all was an Aunt who sent us to charm school. It was at charm school where I learned I could say 'delightful' any time I felt like saying 'BULLSHIT'!"
So, I wouldn't doubt that the queen was jut being... delightful.

(45,251 posts)It's probably on youtube. It seemed to me that, of the three, only Ben Affleck was really able to re-access a relatively strong South Boston accent.
My theory is that television and radio and people re-locating from one state to another has been gradually eliminating regional and local accents. For instance, films of John Kennedy, whose childhood home was in Brookline (like Conan O'Brien's) and who was raised by a mom who had grown up in Boston, had a much stronger accent than any I hear anywhere in Boston --even much stronger than brother Ted Kennedy had by the end of his life.
It's a very hard accent to "do" if you are faking it. "Cliff" in Cheers, for example, did an awful job.

(4,552 posts)Considering GB history of horrific government enforced abuse of gay people and the queens acceptance of it there is nothing to brag about here.
The Queen should not be getting any positive attention for this action. Her attempt at rewriting her history is sickening.

(4,552 posts)England chemically castrated thousands of men and used the law to do it. The man whose brilliance won the second world war was castrated and committed suicide. England's history of gay abuse is shocking. This is one case where the USA acted way better.

(8,401 posts). . . but it was also what the British medical establishment recommended at the time. It wasn't a policy the Queen had any direct authority to dictate. Look, I am a gay man, so I certainly appreciate the horror of it. But remember that at the same time Great Britain was persecuting gay people, so was the U.S. People do evolve, you know. If you want a prime example of it here in the U.S., take a look at the late Senator Robert Byrd, who, over the course of his lifetime, did a complete 180 on issues of race. You can argue that the Queen could have used her position to speak out forcefully on the subject, but the fact of the matter is that virtually NO heterosexual political leaders, either in the UK or in the US, were doing so at that time. It is hardly fair to hold a single person -- even the Queen of England -- responsible for the errors of the age. The point is, she has opened herself to new information and new understanding. And for a woman who is nearly 89 years old, and who, both by virtue of her position and (from what I understand) her nature is someone who is very tradition-minded and rather conservative, that is a remarkable thing indeed!

(4,552 posts)It is interesting to me that while my Christian faith does not accept gay people. You sir are the perfect example of my Christian faith. Forgiveness and acceptance is what Christ taught. You far exceed me.
We may still have a point of differing opinion. While I agree that Senator Byrd did gained great personal enlightenment and understanding. His history is still his history. The church, my church, supported slavery, the crusades and the horrific treatment of Native Americans. England abused gay people in a most horrific manner. We have discovered that sexual abuse of children has been going on unanswered for a long time. This list is long and there is no reason to continue.
No one who had anything to do with any of these crimes against humanity should ever be celebrated for their enlightenment. All these post celebrate the Queen for her enlightenment. I disagree with that. I bet the queen disagrees with that. She also knows her history and her countries history.
We are moving in the right direction and good for us. I have witnessed great strides in humanity during my lifetime. But I firmly believe in humility regarding my sins.

To be fair - it is the Parliament who decide what the Queen states in public - and at least in public a crowned queen, or king for that matter, would state what the Parliament want them to say - and do it as they meant it... That's how Kings and Queen's work this days... Of course she could be less thrilled by it in reality for all what I know - but still in public she will give the impression she accept it...
But then again - as a royal she is natural on the matter - the Queen is the Queen for all people - not just for some - and therefore where she stand on political issues are something kept under rug - or at least not shown in public.....
Our own King had a few mishaps in the early 1990s, when he inherited the crown from his father - who had been the indisputable King of Norway since 1957 - but he learned what to say and not to say rather fast - and his mishaps was rather Innocent ones in the grand scales of things.... And if not loved in the same way as his father was - so at least deeply respected as a fine King - who do his duty as King - and do it with style by the way...

She is wonderful, too.
Though expensive and perhaps unnecessary, she does provide some therapeutic benefit to many in the UK.
Edit after actually taking the time to read the entire thread: Surely the Queen socializes with all sorts of people, and would have a broad-minded view of government's role in their lives, but others insist she is indeed a bigot on this issue. If so, that's very sad. I pegged her as more of an intellectual than a member of the Moral Elite.
