Beyoncé isn't the only talented entertainer but she has gained far more notoriety than many of the other talented women in the music world.
This is Maria Brink --
She sings for the band In This Moment. She is an absolute vocal powerhouse, writes her own music and plays the piano. She's also a single mother. Her music is soulful, even as it is soul-shattering. It tears you open and leaves you bare, raw, exposed. It's as disturbing as it is beautiful. It's meant to be jarring and push people to look deeper at themselves.
This is what she had to say about her 2014 single, "Whore" (yes, you read that right) --
Here's the video (stick with it to the end or don't watch at all, just sayin') --
Quite the vocal range, huh?
She'll probably never even be a contender for a Grammy and if she is it will more than likely be one of the niche categories. She'll never have the big stage sets and the massively choreographed dance numbers. Yeah, those take talent and hard work but they get the most support because they make the most money -- as you well know.
Maria will never get to sit with the cool kids. She'll probably see her entire career pigeonholed because her music isn't the right kind of music. Her ability to compose, write lyrics, perform, sing and convey a message will be ignored because she's not with the right groups of people.
Is that fair?

(12,778 posts)I've never heard of her before. It goes to show how truly talented artists can be overlooked by the music company's media machines.

(16,286 posts)Oh lord....
How about my idea of a "Separate But Equal Grammy"
This way your pals get theirs without competing with non whites?
We could have two , one for whites and one for everybody else?

(19,497 posts)Seeing as you added the sarcasm tag I did not take it seriously.
We could have two , one for whites and one for everybody else?
It seems you are the one who is most opposed to open competition.

Kanye West and Justin Bieber, two peas in a pod, both with about the same amount of non-talent.

(16,286 posts)he is an asshole and I dont listen to his music, but his talent is not questioned by anyone in the music business.

(5,455 posts)If you don't make the music industry money, you won't be a success in mainstream music, no matter how talented you may be.
The older I get, the more I hate MTV, which I liked when it first appeared. Unfortunately it changed the commercial music industry away from where talent usually determined success and more toward who looked good, danced good and could put together a slick, well produced video.
No fancy stage show, no fancy production, just a top notch singer with a really good orchestra performing live. Around 2:05 she hits the high note and really shows what a great voice she has. And yet 99% of the U.S. has never heard of her.

(24,544 posts)I just find it interesting that people are screaming at Kanye at what he did to Beck and Taylor Swift and I heard nary a peep when that man had the nerve and stupidity to claim his struggle with the paparazzi was the same as the civil rights movement.

And some of the language being used at him and by default Beyoncé over what he said to Beck is as revealing as it is revolting.

(46,416 posts)Beyonce has broad appeal. THIS gal...uh...limited. I don't like this. I am not a fan of Beyonce either, but I understand why some artists are able to attract a wide fan base.
