Oklahoma Conservatives Want To Ban AP US History So Future Generations Are Stupid Enough To Vote GOP
A house panel in the great state of Oklahoma, where the winds come sweeping down the plains, has voted to cut all state funding for the AP US History courses.
Their stellar reasoning for this decision was that it emphasizes “what is bad about America” and that it promotes “American exceptionalism.” Oklahoma, of course, was founded by Native Americans fresh off the Trail Of Tears, who likely have some stories of their own about what is bad about America. Yet, here we are in 2015 with lawmakers trying to revise the school curriculum in order to make sure students are taught things that align with their party’s political ideology.
In order to understand the ulterior motives at play, one must first understand why it is we learn Social Studies in school.
You had to sit through Government, History, Civics, Econ, and the rest of your Social Studies courses, so you’d know how to vote. Social Studies taught properly ensures an informed electorate, and voters capable of making informed decisions while understanding the gravity of these decisions. This is what Social Studies is for, and apparently conservatives can’t have that.
