I was trying to add a somewhat different point, though, to do with priorities and distracting the populace.

what I've been trying to notice lately is not only which stories our media treats as worthy of taking up all the oxygen in the room, but also which story was in the news just before they began to distract us with another shiny thing.

Government also attempts to manage what we pay attention to (or get distracted from) in various ways. Perhaps the most famous is the Friday afternoon news dump.
