"The Book of the Negro"

Has anyone been watching this mini series? I have only seen a few bits and pieces and it always leaves me with a very bad taste in my mouth but I was wondering it is based on real events. People and I mean the Majority of Americans were extremely cruel people back in the late seventeen hundreds. Or probably what I should say is cruelty was ignored by the vast majority and allowed to flourish.

They could not show Roots prime time like they did in the 70's today. It was brutal and too many racists were be cheering the slave masters in today's toxic environment.
