It seems so when our society is structured that having a job or making money is a privilege, and that we need money in order to live. Thus, one would equate then that it is thus a privilege to live, because without money you are basically at the mercy of luck, luck if you are able to find people with compassion that decide you are worth saving, luck that predators won't come and further take advantage of you, luck that somehow you can get out of your situation and be able to make money eventually. And if you don't have such luck? Tough, you might just die early or be so miserable as to want to die.
Strange, in the Declaration of Independence, one of the rights declared in it was the right to life. Of course though, it wasn't a legal document and just merely a declaration. Still, it's just another example of the disconnect between America's declared values and it's actual values.

(861 posts)Interesting post.
Maybe in the future there will arise a utopian style, star trek next generation-like society, where its no longer necessary to make money to survive.

(2,273 posts)Theoretically you could head out to the middle of no where USA and squat on the land, you could build a little shelter and grow your own vegetables then poach wild game. If no one was around for 100's of miles you probably could get away with living this way and some people do. However if you want to be part of society then you have to join the rest of it with means subjugate yourself to a life of serfdom where your days are spent working to make money for someone else and you barely have enough to live on. It totally sucks but it sure is better than dying of dysentery on land you were squatting on.
