(26,060 posts)he got the idea for that sign from the Jewish symbol for a Cohan (early Jewish "high priest" - Mr. Nimoy was raised an Orthodox Jew. Here's a picture of it and it will be engraved on his tombstone:

"We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead...Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human."--Admiral James T. Kirk, speaking at the burial service of his friend, comrade, and confidant, Mr. Spock.

(3,523 posts)They make a great trilogy. And don't let anyone tell you that all the odd numbered ones are bad. 3 is good in the context of the story. And almost as heart wrenching as 2.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,198 posts)2, 3, 4 are cohesive in their story and are at the core of the Star Trek movie experience.
1 and 5 were both highly disappointing.
6 was decent enough.

(81,487 posts)And yes, I do believe the original series was on Friday nights.
I can still remember one of the "TV Guide" covers from that era - in which the argument would, today, be termed "Team Kirk vs Team Spock." He was on the cover and the question next to his photo was "Is It Sexy To Be Smart?" The argument outlined in the cover story was about the two conflicting camps of Star Trek fans - those who were hot for Kirk, the brawny swaggering attractive dude who could fist-fight as well as he could love up the ladies, versus the calm, detached, cerebral Spock, presumably unreachable and therefore even more irresistibly attractive. I was on the "Team Spock" side. Brains over brawn, every time.
SHIT - I just realized, I'm leaving people off the list of "Star Trek Lost", shall we say.
Not only Scotty and Bones and Sarek, but Sarek's first wife (and Spock's human mother) Amanda, Christine Chapel, and of course, Gene Roddenberry, who was nicknamed "The Great Bird of the Galaxy." BUMMER. Slowly but surely we're losing them. Glad we still have them on film, videotape, and disc.

It's ironic that he admired Boris Karloff. Dear Boris was also taken from us in February by emphysema, at a slightly younger age. Teenager in Vulcan years.

(1,245 posts)Can't believe I missed this news yesterday ... so damn busy I didn't get a chance to check in on any news, just woke up to this.
ST was the first 'grown-up' type show I ever got into, at about 8 years old. I remember religiously watching the syndicated version in the early 1970's ... probably seen every episode by the time I was 11 or 12. Loved all the gorgeous ladies they had on, but some of the episodes were pretty scary to me too ... the one with 'Dr. Corby' and the big bald android dude 'Rock' who just tossed a redshirt into a bottomless pit right at the beginning.
I loved all four main characters, but Spock was my favorite. He taught us all the value of using logic to solve problems, and that it was actually pretty cool to be smart.
Godspeed, Mr. Nimoy. You touched many people's lives, and ye will be missed.
