WASHINGTON -- Rep. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) on Wednesday offered legislative language that would "automatically" punish family members of people who violate U.S. sanctions against Iran, levying sentences of up to 20 years in prison.

The provision was introduced as an amendment to the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act of 2013, which lays out strong penalties for people who violate human rights, engage in censorship, or commit other abuses associated with the Iranian government.

Cotton also seeks to punish any family member of those people, "to include a spouse and any relative to the third degree," including, "parents, children, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, grandparents, great grandparents, grandkids, great grandkids," Cotton said.

"There would be no investigation," Cotton said during Wednesday's markup hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "If the prime malefactor of the family is identified as on the list for sanctions, then everyone within their family would automatically come within the sanctions regime as well. It'd be very hard to demonstrate and investigate to conclusive proof."

The amendment immediately sparked objections from several members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, who noted that the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees due process rights to anyone charged with a crime under American law.

Do he live in the USA, who you have due proses, for the ones who did a crime - or is he live in DKPR, who have this sorts of crimes on the laws - and whose family of the guilty one can be sent to a camp for the rest of their life - even if they have never did any wrong against the state, whats so ever...

I think mr Cotton is a flown blown fascist, no less..... And he need to be thrown out of the Congress before he can do more damage than he already have been able to do..

I know - rather scary isn't when the right really want a madman like Cotton to be elected president - god know what he is able to do, if he ever got elected to the White House.... He could destroy every home of peace in our time rather fast.... And even end the world as we know it - in a nuclear war..... Mr Cotton should not even be in Congress, or in the Senate - he should have been in a mental institution, undergoing a mental evaluation to se if he is even capable of being a political leader of any stripe... What he did, and who 47 Senators did is close to treason if you ask me.. And I am not by any standard a expert on US constitutional law... But from what I understand, what the 47 Senators did is unprecedented in the whole history of the US...

I think I understand more, what FDR was up against, when he was elected in 1933 - when you look about how the current conservatives act out - because not their man got elected to the white house - FDR was hated by the right - as Obama is it, today - and it is a marvel at all, that he have been able to do anything, when GOP have been all over him, trying to damage, destroy or hinder what he wanted to success when as President....

looking at HIS 'family members'. Any of them guilty of something we can then charge him with?

These people need some serious therapy and I'm not sure they are not beyond the help of even the best mental health practitioners.

If stupidy were a crime, and I'm leaning towards making it a crime, all of them would have been removed from society a long time ago.

Unfortunately, my OP provides this link to videos of the actual committee hearings on the Bill's amendments. In the first video, at about the 1hr41min mark, you can see Cotton speaking about his amendment and then Grayson questioning its constitutionality.

The intent of the amendment was to hold Iranian families to task, if a relative decided to violate the sanctions. Ironically, if this amendment were introduced in the 80's, it would have also ensnared all Americans involved, and those who are related to someone involved, in the Iran/Contra scandal. LOL
