Gov - no-ears but for the tea-party who I think will power my presidential campaign - Pence,
Says he was taken unaware by the backlash. Now is calling for a second law to clarify the first law (that he signed 2 days ago into law) to assure that the law does not allow for discrimination. Ur, Gov Dense, shouldn't you have called for that before signing the bill into law? Nonetheless - the back tracking - when he has supermajorities in both sides of the legislature - is interesting.
Here is the link to the breaking item in Indiana (on a Saturday): http://www.indystar.com/story/opinion/columnists/tim-swarens/2015/03/28/swarens-gov-mike-pence-push-clarification-religious-freedom-law/70611906/
Read it - would love your take: is this a cynical attempt to take any responsibility while hoping the supermajorities keep their newly established (signed by Gov Dense - er - Pence) so that he still keeps his Tea Party bonafides in his predicted Presidential candidacy? Is this recognition that he didn't do his due diligence on the law and now is attempting to play the role of "the responsible adult in the room" among the Indiana GOP?
Glad that the backlash is already having an impact on my state.

What's a dunce to do
salin
(48,954 posts)2 days after I signed the bill into law - I call for a second bill to clarify the law - and I admit that it is clear that this law will cause economic damage to the state. To supporters (tea partitaliban) he is conceding (a mortal political sin - see crazy fav. Sen Cruz), to everyone else he is admitting that he signed the law without requiring clarification - suggesting either that was his intent (discrimination), or that he and his advisers were too unintelligent to perceive the likely effects of this law (they did no homework/consultation outside of the tea partitaliban)
Short version: he and his advisers (and the Indiana GOP legislature) acted as dunces (your term) - and to his desired base... he becomes a turncoat.

(36,217 posts)Behind the scenes, Pence and his team have been scrambling to mitigate that damage both to the state and to the governors political career.
I asked the governor if he had anticipated the strongly negative reaction set off by the bill's passage. His response made it clear that he and his team didn't see it coming.
"I just cant account for the hostility that's been directed at our state," he said. "I've been taken aback by the mischaracterizations from outside the state of Indiana about what is in this bill."
salin

Sucks doesn't it Mr pents.
He didn't see the backlash coming?
Maybe should have asked Az gov for advice.
salin
(48,954 posts)former Az gov has already lived through this. Of course, cynicism suggests he could have discounted her experience, because she as a woman gov - and as a male gov. nothing similar could occur to him - thus no reason to consult.

(80,700 posts)He's just another teabagger/extremist CON who pays attention only to the gospel according to Pox Noise and hate radio - and THAT is his reality.
OF COURSE he would NOT anticipate the blowback that he created.
OF COURSE he didn't see it coming and didn't expect any such thing. He clearly surrounds himself only with fellow nutcases, who ALSO didn't see it coming - because nobody he listens to warned him about this. That's because there WAS no one around who had a more realistic, normal view. They pay no attention to anyone with OUR worldview, for example. Ours is just summarily dismissed as invalid or hedonistic or godless. So he pays no attention to that. Doesn't bother figuring that kind of viewpoint into his equations AT ALL. Our side really has no relevance to him, and we frankly don't exist in his world. We're just there to be blocked and defied and undercut and muzzled and mocked and maybe reformed or taken to one of those deprogramming camps to screw all our heads back on "right." So when it smacks him full-on in the face like a big fat shitty cream pie, it takes him completely by surprise. Not only do we exist, WE HAVE A VOICE, TOO. A powerful one. AND we have allies - even in the business community which I'm sure he NEVER in a million years would have expected to find such a mindset. Everybody's a religionista just like he is, correct? Or they damn well should be!
But... but... but... you mean I actually have to allow for another point of view? I have to get it through my thick skull that some people will see this VERY differently than my crowd does - and they actually have an impact? I thought only MY side had an impact. I thought only MY side counted. I thought the interests of MY side were all the interests there even WERE! What the hell happened?
Just guessing, of course, but when some of these folks get a little power under their belts using the formulae and approaches and policy sloganeering they have, seems to me they start to take on an air of invincibility. OF COURSE this is a good idea. God's on OUR side! OF COURSE this is good and necessary in this increasingly heathen world! OF COURSE everybody's going to sing its praises!
Oh... wait...
Rude awakening mr. governor. GREAT debut you just made on the national stage! And you actually think YOU'RE ready to run for the White House! As they say in the Queen song: "Another one bites the dust!" Mr. Candidate "My-religion-says-I-don't-have-to-work-with-you." Yeah, THAT will serve you well in the 21st Century, kid.

(36,217 posts)A simple case of mistaken identity.
Buzz Click and Nadine were going at it 'tooth and nail' in one of her bizarre threads when I asked a simple but, according to Nadine, dumb question down thread. She responded in a hostile and condescending manner, picking up where she left off with Buzz Click. The post was hidden and she was subsequently locked out of her own thread. Two terse PMs from Nadine thanked me for the hide and for trying to 'get her' then informed me I was on her "Iggy" list and she was taking it to Meta. Her gripe was NOT well received at Meta, but it was extremely amusing when it was finally pointed out to Nadine I wasn't Buzz Click. 'Alas', I remain on her "Iggy" list to this day.

(48,954 posts)that he is pushing for clarification - after the fact. Very big deal. Forces much of the teaparty GOP into a back step mode... to have to "protect LBGT against discrimination" (Governor's dictate) - when the whole point was to make such discrimination allowable. Suddenly an interesting fiasco to those who didn't care in the run up to the passing of the bill and signing of the law.
Don't think a repeal will happen here. But if there is a legislative or executive "clarification" that prevents the intent of the law - that is in effect until the law is reviewed (and hopefully rejected) by courts that are ruled by the Constitution - then that is the best next thing to a repeal.

(82,849 posts)Pence's disingenuous mewling is belied by the fact that he signed this crackpot law in private without fanfare. He knew quite well what he was signing into law, he wasn't proud of it, but he did it anyway. Now, having eaten his cake, he'd like to have it back. Well Mike, go shit on your desk and pick out the cake; you can have it again.

(14,040 posts)when Arizona tried this not too long ago. When the NFL said they'd host no Super Bowls there if Brewer signed the bill, the bill was quickly vetoed. There was also national and local backlash to the law. So, yeah, Pence either wasn't paying attention or the Republican committee thought Indiana was a small enough state they could slip it by the American populace.
I find it ironic that there are people who are outright homophobic but are reasonable enough to see that legislating that homophobia is a bad idea. Pence is a bit late coming to that conclusion.

(48,954 posts)Last gov was a privatization freak - who folks wanted (on the right) to run for Pres. The one thing I will say nice about Mitch - was that he did try to get the religious right to back down.
Now you have this gov - who thought he was the conservative gift to the country when he was Minority whip in the House of Rep - who returns to Indiana with what most Hoosiers (even those who support him) to preen for a presidential bid (but unlike Mitch - no one but him really wants him as pres.)
I am guessing that his presidential run (in his imagination only) has just come to a screeching halt.
Hey Gov: Bigotry really isn't a modern value of a civil society. Your claims that this law, did not intend to allow discrimination, are belied by your private signing - your initial preening around "Of Course I will Sign This". Your sudden concern that this law might cause harm to some citizens based on legalized discrimination or that the state's economy may take a major hit because indicates that some employees/customers/clients/execs would be treated as less than equal in this state - all make you look craven. And certainly illequipt to be gov., let alone president.

I do believe he will attempt to get some back-alley armtwisting to some leg.s to try to weaken the economic impact on the state. However, the GOP has supermajorities in both sides of the legislature. I don't know that he could convince enough of them to act on creating a legislative fix.
Sadly (I live here) - this is a fiasco.
