Th new RFRA laws look like a springboard to theocracy. These laws are more than just about discrimination protection. They are about protecting the religious right from criticism for its twisted political activity. It is their protection in that in their view you cannot criticize or act against them for their religious beliefs no matter what they do. Anytime you try to thwart their plans you are accused of being against religion or you are persecuting them. Such strategy keeps their opposition on the defensive.
Even today they are playing that meme in a sense. The war on democracy is just really beginning. With the GOP and all the money behind it, they can create a lot of mayhem. And we see such all over the landscape with onerous laws. We see women's rights eroding as well as our own if we do not believe..

(111,367 posts)when he signed that bill. This is what theocracy looks like, the church makes the laws and the idiot puppet signs them.
Fortunately, this sort of fundy Christian overreaching is pissing off one hell of a lot of people. Every time they do this, they get more pushback.
Let's hope they have long enough memories in Indiana to push back hard.

(35,015 posts)Indiana fired the first volley, with a lot of other states poised to follow their lead. The objective - total Christian dominance of the US, with the laws to back them up.

(10,602 posts)Things are more dicey than Americans realize. And I think things are more dangerous now. You will notice that Indiana is really NOT backing down. I am saying the laws are more than about gays.

(10,602 posts)The religious are already a protected class. If you were to demonstrate near their churches you could be arrested for a hate crime. RFRA reinforces that possibility.

(40,416 posts)That is how these nut cases framed the civil rights movement in my earlier political years. Let them all eat those words.

(114,904 posts)I'm a fuck of a lot more concerned with corporate ownership of our government and both parties. Fortunately, there are powerful forces aligned against the religious nutwads.
I expect the SCOTUS to legalize marriage equality from coast to coast- and do most SCOTUS experts. Where does THAT fit in with your theory.

But it was a trial balloon, and an example of the kind of stupid we are choosing when we give majorities to today's Republican Party.
