More Kansas Schools To Close Early For Lack Of Funds

Six school districts in Kansas will close early this year, following budget cuts signed in March by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback.

Two school districts, Concordia Unified School District and Twin Valley Unified School District, announced earlier this month that they would end the year early because they lacked the funds to keep the schools open. This week, four more districts confirmed they would also shorten their calendars, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.

The four newly reported closings are in the unified school districts of Smoky Valley, Haven, Skyline and Shawnee Heights. The Capital-Journal reports that most Kansas schools already exceed the required minimum number of school days, so they can afford to cut a few days without violating state law.

Still, the decision to cut days was a painful one for school districts, judging from an announcement posted by the Twin Valley school board in late March, just days after Brownback signed a bill cutting $51 million in school funding for the current year. "The Twin Valley Board of Education made a difficult decision and has approved a change in the last day of school," the board wrote. "This decision was based on the financial plight of the district. The district has few fiscal reserves to endure the present mid year unplanned financial cuts recently signed into law." ..............(more)

Crank out an undereducated workforce and population just so the Koch Bros. and others in the 1% can add to their billions in wealth from the tax savings.

We're seeing a similar thing at the college level in Louisiana where they have another RW stooge holding the governor's seat. I almost laughed at Jindal's response to why he's so unpopular. He essentially said it's because he's doing what the people elected him to do. It's almost a page out of Yogi Berra's line of humor.

get re-elected even though all the polls show that to be unlikely. I am pretty sure elections are being rigged in a lot of ways, so only when Dems have an overwhelming victory that's too large to steal do they actually get credited with the win.

And I suspect a lot of corporatist Dem leaders who might lose a primary to a more populist candidate go along with the hackable voting machines that we *know* can't be trusted because they have been persuaded by Repubs to do so in order to protect their own cushy sinecure.

The problems associated with cutting education to the bone will multiply exponentially. I hope Kansas can recover, but it is going to a long time coming back I fear.

25. Vicious Cycle
Fri Apr 24, 2015, 08:05 AM
Apr 2015

Hey, Kansas how's that libertarian vicious cycle going for you now for the haves and the have not's on the AYN Rand concept of basically you are now officially on your own and are turning into a failed state right before your eyes------democrats didn't do this-----republican / libertarian hypocrites did---and what's really an eye opener you keep voting them in---stupid does is stupid does.
Your economy is tanking you have no tax base to keep the social, educational, infrastructure maintained.
You pay a college football coach millions, governor and legislature who gets paid what ---to take down the citizens for being the problem of having "things".
And then right in your own comfy failing state you have the Koch's paying what in taxes and they have the Heartland Institute running around doing what---lying on climate and other issues, getting Pat Roberts elected, ALEC----who is presently giving written reports to your legislature to put on the floor and voting on them, attacking pensions, public education, infrastructure maintenance, pensions, clean water, air, food, woman's right to privacy (your right wing governors and Life to Right's main ambition), blaming people on social benefits as moochers, and turning right around and blaming you all
Now I know what TOTO told Dorothy------- took the red slippers -------I'm otta here, find your own way home ----- you are on your right wing libertarian own---how's that representative government working for you.

And, I have asked my federal senator in my state if there is anyway to quit sending my tax dollars to the federal government to keep supporting your governors policies and grand experiment of failure, I want my tax dollars to help the country not take it down.
