Man killed by cops for failure to produce ID when dropping off stray cat at animal-shelter

http://www.alternet.org/cops-kill-man-refusing-id-he-dropped-stray-cat-animal-shelter-police-remain-silent

"Immediately upon arrival, the police began to force Lawrence to show his ID, eventually attempting to arrest him. In an apparent struggle, Lawrence was fatally shot by the officer in the abdomen, according to police."

...

"Now almost four months after Lawrence’s needless killing at the hands of police, police have shunned any thoughts of transparency in the case and numerous questions remain.

Surveillance footage that may have captured the incident has never been released, nor has the name of the officer involved in the shooting.

Additionally, there has been no indication as to why a man that simply refused to show ID was killed by an officer sworn to uphold the law. It was his right not to identify in that circumstance, regardless of shelter policy,
There has been no indication that Lawrence possessed any weapon, which begs the question; what alleged justification did the officer have for using lethal force on a man that simply refused to show the requested ID while dropping a stray cat off at an animal shelter?"

snip from the article>

As we reported previously, the staff at the shelter, rather than simply accepting the cat, proceeded to demand that Lawrence show government issued identification. Per shelter policy, they demanded Lawrence show ID, prior to being allowed to leave, according to information released by police immediately after the shooting.

Lawrence showed them a notarized legal identification in the form of an affidavit, rather than the standard Department of Motor Vehicle issued ID card. In what would prove to be a fatal move, shelter employees refused to accept his form of ID and called the police.

Immediately upon arrival, the police began to force Lawrence to show his ID, eventually attempting to arrest him. In an apparent struggle, Lawrence was fatally shot by the officer in the abdomen, according to police.

Unless the police were there, how were they going to stop him?

Stupid shelter. I hope his family sues them out of existence.

He instead showed paperwork that identified him as a sovereign citizen and, therefore, not bound by federal, state, or local laws.

More on the dead guy.

Prosecutors said Lawrence had obvious anger issues and often expressed anti-government views.

He pleaded guilty earlier this year to making harassing communications in connection with threats he made in January 2013 to the State Department of Human Resources, and he served 90 days in jail in that case.

Investigators said he had been angry with the department in connection with a child custody dispute.

Lawrence threatened to take a child hostage like Jimmy Lee Dykes, who snatched a 5-year-old child earlier this year and held him for a week in an underground bunker.

He also made references to the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, investigators said.

Two women filed protection orders against Lawrence this year after he allegedly choked one and threatened another.

Court documents listed a variety of addresses for Lawrence, including one in Florida and two on the same road in Dothan.

is pretty much ignoring this story, painting the victims as a right-wing nutjob. Now, I can believe that, but I am still having a problem of why an unarmed man is dead and why the cops are refusing to release video of the incident.

that obviously doesn't make it OK. Nobody should be shot over refusing to show ID. And the reluctance to release the security video is suspicious. I totally agree with you.
