Native Actors Walk off Set of Adam Sandler Movie After Insults to Women, Elders

http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2015/04/23/native-actors-walk-set-adam-sandler-movie-after-insults-women-elders-160110

Approximately a dozen Native actors and actresses, as well as the Native cultural advisor, left the set of Adam Sandler’s newest film production, The Ridiculous Six, on Wednesday. The actors, who were primarily from the Navajo nation, left the set after the satirical western’s script repeatedly insulted native women and elders and grossly misrepresented Apache culture.

The examples of disrespect included Native women’s names such as Beaver’s Breath and No Bra, an actress portraying an Apache woman squatting and urinating while smoking a peace pipe, and feathers inappropriately positioned on a teepee.

The film, which is said to be a spoof of The Magnificent Seven and was written by Adam Sandler and his frequent collaborator Tim Herlihy, is currently under production by Happy Madison Productions for a Netflix-only release. The movie will star Adam Sandler, Nick Nolte, Steve Buscemi, Dan Aykroyd, Jon Lovitz and Vanilla Ice.

Among the actors who walked off the set were Nation tribal members Loren Anthony, who is also the lead singer of the metal band Bloodline, and film student Allison Young. Anthony says that though he understands the movie is a comedy, the portrayal of the Apache was severely negligent and the insults to women were more than enough reason to walk off the set.

Take their lands, break treaties, and then we use them as a basis for comedy.

I won't go to see this one.

That's one of Sandler's movies too. He and his writers wanted to see if they could get the main character's name past studio execs and the censors. I get the inside joke aspect but really? "Blart" is a bloody fart.

The chronically offended and outraged. It is a comedy, and probably a poor one but still. Are only white males allowed to be mocked or stereotyped?

that is for a multitude of others to complain about. I just was noting that, white males are the only one no one complains about when they are mocked or stereotyped. I watch those shows and laugh if they are funny or don't if they are not, but I certainly don't get outraged by it. That was my only point, people being chronically outraged and offended.

so they have a great number of about every type of role, including key comedic roles where they're made fun of. However, white men also hold the greatest amount of power in the US so making fun of them doesn't feed into oppression. Also, they aren't usually made fun of for being white or male, although since they have so many roles, and such a high percentage of the key roles, there are an abundance of jokes they're a part of and some might touch on that.

The plethora of women script writers, women directors, women producers, the female CEOs of Time Warner, Disney, 20thCFox? The Native American ditto? Oh, I know, it's the huge number of Native American women who are in charge of the Hollywood film and TV industry. They live only to mock white men in series and films where talking animals have more speaking roles than Asian American actresses, and somehow, even dipshits like Adam Sandler gets the (gorgeous and young) girl at the end of every film.

The perpetually man-boy actor is a registered Republican. He donated $2,100 to Rudy Giuliani's 2008 failed Republican primary campaign. Not much else is known about his politics.

Opera Man or something like that. Irritatingly unfunny.

I thought his Hanukkah Song was ok. Like you, I thought he managed to do a pretty good job with The Wedding Singer. But I can't think of much else of his that I thought was much good.

He obviously knows what appeals to a mass market, though, and knows how to serve up what it apparently likes.

Most of his characters seemed to be something like that. "Paper Bag Man" or whatever. Real creative.

There is an SNL "Jeopardy" sketch where Jimmy Fallon plays Adam Sandler annoyingly accurate. Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek tells him: "I feel like I want to punch you."

There are plenty of funny movies out there with offensive cultural stereotypes, and when it is done well it works, and it is super funny and nobody's offended. But that's his problem is he's just not funny anymore. He had a couple of funny movies just out of SNL but it sure got old fast.
