(21,506 posts)The part that isn't mentioned is that it was a catalyst for action. It was what came after the riots that was important and what got things accomplished. It wasn't the riot it was the organizing that came after the riot that made things start to change.
You could certainly argue that the stonewall riots were the spark that started the organizing efforts but I would argue that it was the police response in the first place that created the drive for the organizing.
Maybe there will be organizing after this with people actually doing the work that needs to be done to remove the officials responsible for looking the other way while the police brutalized their cities. Maybe but I doubt it.
I hope I am wrong.

(1,712 posts)Stores are insured, customers can use a different store, and employees can get unemployment and new jobs elsewhere. Murdered youth can not be restored, their friends and families can not get a replacement, and an entire generation of young people taught that they're worth less than a CVS by comments like this one get lost yet again.
kacekwl
(7,014 posts)certainly not be restored by looting and burning. Young people should be taught the are worth more than a CVS And should also be taught they are more and better ways to get things to change than looting and burning. I can not see how anyone can defend these actions and think anything will change for the better because of it. This killing and abuse by police will not change overnight and by using violence will delay the change that much longer.

What continues to hold my attention is the factual knowledge that he is by far not the only one that took such a ride, yes others survived if you call being paralyzed survival.....
The tip of the iceberg, I have no doubt thousands of similar stories darken our country...it cannot continue, you do realize that passive silent protests will not stop these horrific attacks...
Next time it could very well be someone you yourself care deeply about, don't doubt it, the future is never certain...
And yes I can feel for those that are effected in other ways, we all can...

(20,176 posts)I've done community organizing work in those neighborhoods. I wish people would stop acting like this isn't a long time coming or is a marginal faction, as opposed to a legitimate outpouring of rage resulting from years of oppression, police harassment and racism in the poorer inner-city areas of Baltimore.
It's a city that has had a substantial economic renaissance over the past 15 years...and not even a small part of it has been visited upon these areas of the city or reaped by the residents of the neighborhoods of West Baltimore. I hate to use the term ghetto...but in the traditional sense of the word, West Baltimore is ghettoized.
Nobody talks about it but the areas of DC on the east bank of the Anacostia are in the same situation. Walled off from the turn-around of the rest of DC by the river, Ward-8 is used by the city to shut-out and hold the "undesirable" minority population that is being forced out of NW and Capitol Hill by revitalization and gentrification.

REASON FOR ALERT
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
ALERTER'S COMMENTS
This was just completely unnecessary, not to mention incredibly rude.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Apr 27, 2015, 11:57 PM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: At this point, hiding almost anything would be unfair, since almost nothing gets hidden for reasons other than jurors personally disliking the poster and I won't do that kind of shit. Disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, and otherwise inappropriate are all absolutely fine on DU today. Even encouraged!
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Seen worst said to legal gun owners on DU.
Juror #7 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Why post just to insult instead of making an actual argument? This shit has got to stop. Hide this garbage.

(12,319 posts)Did it actually burn down? I had read that a CVS and a Rite-Aid had been looted, but that was a number of hours ago.
If those pharmacies are closed down, however, it is a matter of concern. Here is an example:
<You're the mother of a 10 year old girl getting chemo for leukemia The doctor called in her prescription to CVS for steroids that she is required to take the day before her chemo treatments. The pharmacy ran it through your daughter's insurance and filled the prescription prior to suddenly being shut down today.>
<You can't pick up the prescription. Another pharmacy can't fill it because it has already been run through her insurance. For it to be run through at another pharmacy, CVS has to cancel out their claim. You don't have the money to pay for this yourself.>
<You try to get this resolved by calling another CVS and calling the doctor's office. This takes all day, the window for taking the steroid is over, and now you have to cancel her chemo for tomorrow.>
Freddie Gray's death is another senseless death in a string of tragedies being perpetrated against black youth in our country. When will it end, for God's sake?
It doesn't mean we should lose our understanding of other peoples' troubles and the plights they find themselves in during these difficult times.

(49,038 posts)I mean, maybe black people should just ask cops to stop killing them. I'm sure that would work. All these protests and riots are just going to interrupt white people's feelings of safety, and soon they might start thinking that all this "murder of an unarmed black teenager" stuff is a big deal.
