Cop In Gray Case Had Domestic Violence Charges

One of the police officers accused in the Freddie Gray case was twice accused of domestic violence.

Records from the sheriff's office and court show Baltimore Police Officer Lt. Brian Rice, a central figure in the arrest of Freddie Gray, was hospitalized three years ago over mental health concerns. He also had his gun confiscated.

The report doesn't indicate how long Officer Rice was hospitalized, but his guns were confiscated, according the Associated Press. The County Carroll Sheriff's Office report quoted Rice as saying he "could not go on like this" and threatened to commit an act. The act itself was censored in the public version of report…

Rice had twice been accused of domestic violence and was temporarily ordered by a court to stay away from the person in the second case…

2. I don't blame the Baltimore PD for the way they handled lt. Rice when he was supposedly

suicidal. The claim came from his ex-girlfriend and mother of his child. He had said, "I can't go on like this". The responding police officers said they thought he was "attention seeking" and didn't think he was suicidal, but they confiscated his weapons and took him in for a psych hold and evaluation. I'm glad the Baltimore police officers who responded to that call did the right thing and didn't hesitate to do what was necessary to one of their own.

If your comment was that mentally unstable people are members of the Baltimore PD, that may be true, but I do think it's important to note that at least Baltimore PD did what was necessary when they were brought in. Neither of the domestic assault claims led to a restraining order. The one mentioned here was temporary until there could be a hearing. At the hearing, no restraining order was issued (per what I read) so I'm not sure they could do anything to him professionally for that.

Not trying to excuse this guy or his behavior, I'm pretty certain he has mental issues, but I just can't say that the Baltimore PD was in a position to do anything more about it. Of course the big question is: How did he keep passing the mental fitness evaluations? Maybe it's time to improve those exams.
