Marshall University Has Removed Football Player From Team After Charges He Assaulted A Gay Couple
We take all accusations against our student-athletes seriously, especially those of such a sensitive nature. - Marshall University Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick
Steward Butler has been dismissed from the Marshall University football team after the coaching staff investigated charges that the star running back had punched a gay couple for kissing on a public street.
Butler was was arrested this morning and charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery after a unnamed gay couple told police Butler assaulted them. According to the criminal complaint, the couple was walking on a public street when they stopped to kiss. Butler, who was a passenger in a passing car, spotted the display of affection and "approached the two men, shouting derogatory words toward their sexual orientation." Butler is then accused of punching one of the men in the face with a closed fist.
Fortunately, the gay couple had the presence of mind to record the assault. Huntington, West Virginia, Police Detective Chris Sperry told WSAZ that without that evidence, they couldn't have charged Butler, who claimed the gay men were approaching the car and he felt threatened. It might have ended with a case of jock said, gays said, but the video told the real story. Detective Sperry said Steward could plainly be heard making derogatory comments to the couple. "It's not a pleasant thing to watch," he said.
