They're actually nothing more than clickbait schemes. Unfortunately, you'll inevitably end up with that one Idiot Facebook Friend (c) who posts it on his or her feed as if they've received some amazing scoop that the traditional media somehow missed. I had someone a few weeks ago in all seriousness posted some story from a bogus news site claiming that the CIA confessed to killing Marilyn Monroe. A two second internet search would confirm the story was a fake, but the person in all her honesty thought it was true.

For good satire, stick to either The Onion or Borowitz.
