I was good at the job, and because it only required about four hours a day to complete the assigned work, I could really bust-ass for those four hours and coast through the rest of the day.
But it was hard, painstakingly detailed, physical work.
My average was $17.88 per hour. In 1978.
That was damned good money at that time. Damned good money. In fact it was nearly enough to surpass the maximum income for Social Security which was at 37K at that time. (It's over 100K now.)
But they decided (whoever they are) that working folks don't need to have a good life and good jobs so they started sending shit out of the country - to Mexico, SE Asia, China and so on.
Now they want to retrain workers? I remember that. They took my good job with great pay and wanted to retrain me to do ______________. That only works if there are actually jobs available and around here, there really never were comparable jobs at that time nor now.
It's all a fucking lie. It's all a punishment by the government.

(3,595 posts)Business Week rated it as the most efficiently run d.c. in the world.
BUT
D & B wanted to farm out as much of its work as possible. So the buildings and computers were sold to Computer Sciences Corporation and CSC had the contract to perform the data center's work.
CSC decided to outsource to India. The regional manager from CSC was offered a bonus if he could transfer the tasks to India in one year.
They sent about 10 guys from India to learn the tasks. It was clear to the D & B former employees that the Indians were not up to the task. They would have been with another 6 months of training but that would have cost the manager his extra bonus.
SO the N.J. center was closed.
I believe it was less than 6 months before a major fuck-up took place and D & B ended up suing C.S.C.
C.S.C settled and the terms are, of course, sealed.

(3,747 posts)OA206 (outsideagitators206.org) talked about how retraining was a bunch of crap and the way jobs are being approached is entirely wrong. Thanks for the link.
And a revolution would be nice, but I don't think this country is ready yet. One can hope and work in the meantime.
