Girl Scouts under scrutiny from Catholic bishops
http://news.yahoo.com/girl-scouts-under-scrutiny-catholic-bishops-181843252.html
Long a lightning rod for conservative criticism, the Girl Scouts of the USA are now facing their highest-level challenge yet: An official inquiry by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
At issue are concerns about program materials that some Catholics find offensive, as well as assertions that the Scouts associate with other groups espousing stances that conflict with church teaching. The Scouts, who have numerous parish-sponsored troops, deny many of the claims and defend their alliances.
The inquiry coincides with the Scouts' 100th anniversary celebrations and follows a chain of other controversies.
Earlier this year, legislators in Indiana and Alaska publicly called the Scouts into question, and the organization was berated in a series aired by a Catholic broadcast network. Last year, the Scouts angered some conservatives by accepting into a Colorado troop a 7-year-old transgender child who was born a boy but was being raised as a girl.

Fairly biased article from yahoo, which isn't a surprise.

The RCC clearly does not respect the founding principles of this nation.
How long before Rome and their Evangelical cousins intrude into other faiths, private enterprise, and our homes?
THIS WILL HAPPEN.

(13,468 posts)Child rape hasn't completely destroyed the Church in the US, so I guess they will just keep on trying.

(16,093 posts)Where are all these Catholics I keep hearing about that are sick and tired of these bishops...where are the hypocrites who use birth control and then still give money to the pro rapist Vatican hacks?
When are they going to stand up and be counted, when are they going to tell the bishops to STFU?
Never that's when!!!
The only thing that will shut these evil, vile men up...is when the chuches are standing empty, and the Vatican's coffers are as bare as those of Mother Hubbard cupboards!
But I don't think there are that many Catholics with the guts to do this...

(14,337 posts)and I will sign it. LONG OVERDUE. They count as members of their flock those who for years want nothing to do them. They inflate their number because of this to make it sound like they have more clout than they really do.

(22,541 posts)How can some of them be so damned scummy? But there's a church here in a city I'm visiting that had a gay dad and his son read part of the service in front of the whole church at the Easter ceremony. His partner and the younger sibling were in the front row taking (sneaking) pictures, smiling proudly. The whole church was smiling proudly, young and old, gay and straight, white and black, etc.
That was another surprising thing for me. I've never seen so many African American catholics in my life, much less LGBTQ catholics. But there they all were - entire families of them, loving every minute of it.

(58,162 posts)the Vatican wants to put an end to the very church you are describing. my main complaint is the catholic church is run by an elected head of state.
i find no reason why they should`t be taxed and follow the laws of our country.

(22,541 posts)Because that church I saw was beautiful and should be the heart and soul of the Catholic Church itself.

(36,286 posts)the Church is us, not (just) the bishops!
Unfortunately, under our present organization, that parish you saw could be closed at the whim of the bishop. Even worse, the bishop could send in a pastor who'd get those gays out of the building!
It happened here in Syracuse - the parish that was noted as a center for GLBT Catholics was closed and merged with St. Lucy's - over the objections of the man who pastored them both. Then the word came down that the people at St. Lucy's weren't comfortable with teh gays. (I have no idea of the truth of that statement - St. Lucy's is noted here as a center for Native Americans.)
'course, wouldn't you know that All Saints took up the cause as a welcoming parish for all people!

(22,541 posts)I've never seen such strong, faithful people in my life. Real faith, not the silly, put-on faith that I grew up with in fundamentalist churches. These people glowed with an inner strength that only comes from having lived through tough times and come through them better than before because they did it together.

(33,688 posts)of the Red Beanie (copyright Charles Pierce). The Girl Scouts have a hell of a lot more goodwill with the public than these klowns. But then the Girl Scouts didn't spend forty or more years protecting and covering for pedophiles.

(101,361 posts)If those are what it means by "possible problematic relationships with other organizations", then it would seem the Roman Catholic church is keen to break links with any charity that actually does good in the world.
