A high school classmate of presidential candidate Mitt Romney told ABC News today that he considers a particular prank the two pulled at Michigans Cranbrook School to be assault and battery and that he witnessed Romney hold the scissors to cut the hair of a student who was being physically pinned to the ground by several others.
Its a haunting memory. I think it was for everybody that spoke up about it
because when you see somebody who is simply different taken down that way and is terrified and you see that look in their eye you never forget it. And that was what we all walked away with, said Phillip Maxwell, who is now an attorney and still considers Romney an old friend.
I saw it with my own eyes, said Maxwell, of the anecdote first reported by the Washington Post. Maxwell said Romney held the scissors helping to cut the hair of a student, John Lauber, who was presumed to be gay and who had long hair. It was a hack job
clumps of hair taken off.
Maxwell said he held the boys arm and leg, describing he and his friends as a pack of dogs.

(32,623 posts)It's horrifying. If this broke about some frosh congresscritter, or anyone, it'd be ugly but to think that someone with this darkness within them became so successful, so powerful, is absolutely horrifying.
I don't see how he gets past it.
I NEVER use the word horrify and yet here I am! That's exactly how I feel.

(32,623 posts)-of cancer. He had mentioned the attack to one of the guys who came forward, and told him he thought about it often.

(12,272 posts)I just read that about this incident. I typed "Mitt Romney bully" into Google and while the story has legs, there is already some spin being applied.

(11,862 posts)The first WP story and the first ABC story got a lot of flack about mitt...now this one comes out..and the majority are pro mitt..and believe it is as conspiracy...and, well, Obama sold cocaine when he was a youth!

(36,063 posts)We haven't actually heard Romney admit that his assault was a terrible thing.
It was just a prank, that MIGHT have gotten out of hand.

(12,272 posts)But he is sorry if his pranks got out of hand.

(11,491 posts)I consider it as bullying plain and simple. A prank is a joke sometimes not funny, but this was a kid terrified...for anyone to write off bad crap done as a prank pisses me off!
